NYPL’s St. Agnes Library, at 444 Amsterdam Avenue, nestled in the heart of the historic Upper West Side, opens this month after undergoing comprehensive renovations. Loved by young and old, the library has long been a popular destination for such programs as book discussions, films, story hours and reading-aloud programs for children.
The community couldn’t wait for its branch to return--and now the doors are finally opening! Please join our celebration on February 11 at 11 a.m. at the beautifully restored 1906 landmark. Fox & Friends Weekend co-host Alisyn Camerota will join in the day’s festivities, which will feature activities for kids and adults, including a magic show, face painting, drumming and a neighborhood history odyssey.

City and State Budget Cuts Trigger NYPL Service Reductions
While we are very excited about reopening the St. Agnes Library, there is also less cheerful news. The recent announcement of a $5.9 million mid-year City budget cut and cuts in the State budget have left NYPL with little choice but to reduce service to an average of 45 open hours per week at neighborhood libraries. The schedule aims to maintain as many services as possible and will go into effect on February 16.
Candide goes Web 2.0 and Makes World News (Again)
International news coverage--from venerable outlets such as The Independent, La Stampa, ArtDaily to numerous French blogs and websites--confirms that NYPL is on to something with its latest digital exhibit, On the Road with Candide. The Library’s new approach to Voltaire’s scandalous satirical novella tells Candide’s story using 74 illustrations by 20th-century American artist Rockwell Kent and invites visitors to participate. Chart Candide’s journey on Google Earth, add comments, drawings, photos and videos, and, in a yet-to-be-released feature, annotate Voltaire’s text in an interactive web edition.

For hundreds of reading-challenged teenagers and adults who find help at NYPL’s Centers for Reading and Writing each year, learning to read and obtaining a library card is a key step on the road to success. We wanted to find out more about students like Precious, so we talked to NYPL Literacy Site Advisor Steven Mahoney.
