READ THIS: Fancy Nancy Every Day Is Earth Day by Jane O'Connor

We love love love Fancy Nancy at Whom You Know!  And as we are on a bit of a green kick, and not just because St. Patrick's Day is coming up, we turned to Fancy Nancy Every Day Is Earth Day.  Although Peachy Deegan's green crayon is the one that IS worn down and it is not as high on Fancy Nancy's list, by the end of the story as she learns of the many ways she herself can be green as well as influence others, her green crayon is becoming more favored.  Peachy put the Petite Peachy Panel to work and here is what they thought of this book:

Fancy Nancy presents herself once again in this 'I Can Read! Beginning Reading level 1' story about what Nancy describes as a 'holiday for our planet'. We love how Nancy defines new words within the story, such as, 'But I adore being green. (Adore is fancy for really, really loving something.) Being green means taking care of our planet.' This style fosters both independence and comprehension for the young reader. Further, it introduces current vocabulary and concepts which are children are exposed to both inside and outside the classroom. A perfect book to read around Earth Day, Jane presents ways to incorporate a 'green' lifestyle into our daily routines. Aleksey Ivanov and Olga Ivanov's illustrations (based on Robin Preiss Glasser's style) capture the text in pictures. Many children are drawn to this story by the illustrations and study them as they read. The last page provides definitions for the 'fancy words' in this story as well as a summary of four key points that Nancy learned about how to be green. A highly recommended read for your beginning reader!

How can you not love Fancy Nancy? My two year old daughter requests reading Fancy Nancy every night before bed. I love it because it teaches her new vocabulary. Fancy Nancy: Every Day Is Earth Day (I Can Read Book 1) in Paperback is another fantastic addition to the Fancy Nancy Collection. Love that it is short and simple and teaches the importance of taking care of our planet. Love the rhyming slogans like "If less than a mile, bike in style." Even though my two year old does not get it, she loves the sounds and rhythm and images that accompany the words. As per usual, Fancy Nancy become extremely passionate about her subject matter this time being “green”. With exuberance and excitement, Fancy Nancy teaches and great lessons and has dynamite slogans. Bring on more Fancy Nancy!

As a teacher, I like to find books that can help my students understand Earth Day and Fancy Nancy has done it!  She is so lovable that she has made understanding what it means to be "green" to younger students.  This story is a beginning reader book, which makes it easy for those emerging readers in your life.  The students were so excited as we were reading together because they recognized some of the words.  The pictures come alive with the choice of colors that it made the story seem so real.  Many of my students wanted to come up with "green rules" for our class and make posters to hang around the school.  We also discussed, like Nancy and her class, what it means to be green.  The students also enjoyed learning some of the "fancy words" and tips on the last page.  It was so cute to hear them use the words and phrases Fancy Nancy used.  They were so excited about what they learned, many of them said they couldn't wait to get home to share what they learned.
Every Day is Earth Day by Jane O’Connor is my first read in the “I Can Read!” series.  The book is every bit as entertaining as the hardcover stories my daughter loves so much, but the type is standard and easier to read for beginners.  My daughter is only two years old, and clearly not reading, but the smaller paperback books in this series make for easier transport to and from our favorite places.  They’re a standard accessory these days when going to Grandma’s house or to church.  In terms of the purpose of the “I Can Read!” series, we’re not quite there, but I can definitely see how the books can grab the beginner reader’s attention.  The illustrations in this series are every bit as fanciful as those in the hardcover series and the story lines are just as entertaining.  Fancy Nancy is in her full glory in this “Earth Day is Every Day” book.  She’s wise beyond her years and just itching to educate everyone around her.  And when her zest for life results in less than desirable behavior, her parents call her on it, and a lesson is learned.  As a parent – I love it!

Whom You Know highly recommends all of the Fancy Nancy books.
