READ THIS: MANHATTAN IN DETAIL An Intimate Portrait in Watercolor By Robert L. Bowden

Of course we are about the Best of Manhattan at Whom You Know, and we love to constantly celebrate this wonderful city.  Published by one of our favorites, Rizzoli, Manhattan In Detail is a tribute to the most esteemed borough of New York through the art of watercolor.  If you live here, certainly most images painted by Bowden you will recognize, but you will see them through his eye that captures whimsical detail, highlights and shadows.  If you don't live here, you will feel like you have taken a lovely visit through this book which should inspire a real visit!  (If it does, check out our Haute Hotels to stay at!)

We particularly like his depictions of:
*Astor Place subway entrance
*Bethesda Fountain, Central Park
*Restaurant Set-Up with Taxi
*John Finley Walk
*Rizzoli!

For many, Manhattan is a city that defines what a city is — a melting pot of cultures, arts and diversity.  Entrenched in history while simultaneously making history, Manhattan’s streets and sites are familiar  the world over, even for those who have never visited. In Manhattan in Detail, Robert L. Bowden forgoes the tourist’s Manhattan and instead captures the city exposed in her everyday life. Painting en plein air he often includes passing pedestrians and taxis in his paintings, which makes them all the more recognizable and personal for the city’s residents.

Through Bowden’s watercolors, we see the almost humanistic grace that the city carries herself with and recognize our favorite enclaves, such as the steps of New York Public Library where the majestic lions, Patience and Fortitude, stand in perpetuum; or the unmistakable Art Deco spire of the Chrysler Building; even the Vesuvio Bakery storefront which has become a New York institution. Bowden also includes various little-known facts about each of the sights which add to the charm of this book.

Many mourn the city’s changes as they see their favorite corner restaurant give-way to a high rise, but even as she grows and develops New York will forever be New York. Whether you are a born-and-bred New Yorker, a transplant, or a visitor, Manhattan in Detail will be a tender reminder of why many call the city home.
