On Tuesday, May 18, 2010 The Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center hosted its 3rd Annual Spring Ball at The Pierre. This incredible evening is The Society’s main gala and featured cocktails, dinner and dancing, as well as a moving live performance by Grammy Award Winner, Mary J. Blige who belted hits such as No More Drama, Just Fine, and her own breathtaking renditions of Stairway to Heaven and One Love.

With 425 guests in attendance, President of The Society, Heather Leeds welcomed the high-profile crowd of The Society’s members and leaders in fashion, music and media who hit the dance floor all night long to music by DJ Cassidy. The event was Co-Chaired by Tory Burch, Jamie Tisch, Dee Dee Ricks and Shelley Carr, who all sparkled from head to toe with David Yurman jewelry- the official event sponsor.

Distinguished event designer Bronson van Wyck transformed The Pierre’s grand ballroom into a vision of spring with thousands of multi-colored hand-crafted feather butterflies hanging from the ceiling. This dramatic and inspirational backdrop set the stage for the poignant evening honoring Charles L. Sawyers M.D., Chair of the Human Oncology and Pathogenesis Program (HOPP) for his outstanding innovations and scientific achievements at MSKCC. During dinner, Sotheby’s Auctioneer and MSKCC Board Member Jamie Niven lead a live auction to raise additional funds for the HOPP program to help continue Dr. Sawyers’ ground-breaking research of cancer genomes.

Overall, this grand affair raised $1.4 million to benefit The Society’s patient care, research, and education programs at MSKCC and for the HOPP program. Peachy Deegan swung by to see the beautiful butterflies-an amazing display!-and to hear some of the speeches which were witty, intelligent and entertaining.
