ADAM STRAUS AT ARTSITES: A LITTLE BIT OF RETROSPECTION - Paintings: 1992-2008
Opening Saturday, June 12, 2010, 5 - 7 p.m.
June 12 - July 18, 2010
Presentation by Joyce Beckenstein on landscape artists exploring man's intrusion on nature followed by an interview of Adam Straus by Amei Wallach, renouned art critic and filmmaker. Adam Straus's work reflects the best of landscape painting with a touch of the rebel, reminding us of the impacts of man's actions on the vistas we value most. From exquisite landscapes encased in lead frames, to more pointed images of environmental peril, Straus's art imparts a visceral joy found in nature's beauty. References to both traditional landscape oeuvres and contemporary political themes expand one's appreciation, without ever having to abandon an appreciation for an ideal and fleetingly real landscape. In the end it is his deep optimism embedded in a love of the natural world that relays a story, both simple and complex. ADAM STRAUS: A Little Bit of Retrospection shows work spanning 16 years, paintings ranging from critical to elegiac, including landscapes inspired by the East End of Long Island. In addition, portraits from Small Memorials For a Great Loss, which honor those who lost their lives in Iraq will be on view.
Born in Florida, Adam Straus lived in New York City for 13 years and relocated with his wife and son to Riverhead in 2003. Straus has shown with the Nohra Haime Gallery in New York City since 1990. His works have been exhibited throughout the world, including Europe, South America and Asia.
This exhibition is presented in cooperation with the Nohra Haime Gallery, New York.
