We are so psyched about the Chicago Blackhawks winning the Stanley Cup at Whom You Know, however, it cannot be overlooked that this came at a cost in many ways, and one of those ways is in TEETH. The tooth fairy did not visit Duncan Keith, Chicago Defenseman, but the Stanley Cup fairy did and we understand that one is even better. This is printed in Chicago Blackhawk red...we are not being morbid about bleeding teeth and gums when your teeth are knocked out.
Peachy Deegan just loves her teeth and going to Cosmopolitan Dental is one doctor she actually likes going to. We sat down and chatted with Dr. Garo Nazarian to find out what would happen if Peachy loses any teeth in hockey games...so far she has not!
Peachy Deegan: Duncan Keith, Chicago Blackhawks defenseman, lost seven teeth in winning the Stanley Cup. When someone loses a tooth, what is the first thing they should do?
Garo Nazarian: When someone loses a tooth the first thing they should do is get some gauze or tissue and attempt to cover the injured area via hemostasis by biting down hard on the gauze. Then call your dentist immediately!
What would you do when only part of the tooth is lost? What are the options?
When part of the tooth is lost there are a variety of options depending on how much tooth structure is left. If it is only a minor chip with minimal tooth mobility, your dentist may recommend simply having the tooth restored to its original shape by bonding compostite to the tooth. Should you have lost a bigger portion of your tooth due to trauma, you may require anything from root canal therapy, a post and crown, to extraction of the tooth and placement of a bone graft and dental implant.
What would you do if the entire tooth is lost?
If the entire tooth were lost, the ideal option would be to have a dental implant and implant retained crown fabricated to fill the "void".
When hockey players start losing teeth that have previously had problems or have been replaced already, what other implications are there in the correction method?
Properly diagnosed, designed, and custom fabricated mouthguards are essential in the prevention of athletic oral/facial injuries.Custom made mouthguards are supplied by your dentist and provide the dentist with the critical ability to address several important issues in the fitting of the mouthguard.
What did you think of the Stanley Cup competition this year Garo?
I'm a big Ranger's fan but thumbs up to the young and talented Chicago Blackhawks on their first championship since 1961. Well deserved!
