The Island by The Film Movement: Winner of 5 Nika Awards (Russian Oscars®) including Best Film
If you have been dying from the heat in Manhattan, here is a film from Russia set in a climate that will cool you off. The Island captures the life and turmoil of Anatoly, the protagonist who has a life of chaos during the second world war contrasted with a life of relative serenity in a monastary in the 1970's. Somewhere in Northern Russia in a small Russian Orthodox monastery lives a very unusual man. His fellow-monks are confused by his bizarre conduct. Those who visit the island believe that the man has the power to heal, exorcise demons and foretell the future. However, he considers himself unworthy because of a sin he committed in his youth. The film is a parable, combining the realities of Russian everyday life with monastic ritual and routine. Very religious in nature, The Island is a thought-provoking, complex film that will inspire discussion. We are guessing the actual religion is Russian Orthodox, which we think is a precursor to Catholicism. Anatoly strugges with a lot of interpersonal conflict, and the film has dark intonations. Quite artistic with excellent cinematography, The Island is a film to watch if you desire to be deep in thought.
