Adidas & FIFA Football for Hope Festival 2010

Christian Karembeu says football should be used as a tool to educate the young against HIV, Aids and Malaria. The former French international, who is now a member of FIFA's Technical Committee, thinks events like the Football For Hope festival taking place in the township of Alexandra in South Africa are crucial to help educate and integrate young people. The youth festival that has been run alongside the main FIFA World Cup event has included teams from 32 countries made up of teenage boys and girls. The young players were empowered to select their own team names and customise their adidas official kit by selecting shirt colours and design. A team entitled 'Peace' with kids from Israel and Palestine playing together took part in the event. The format of the tournament also saw games played without referees the young people forced to resolve disputes by discussion and dialogue.Karembeu said, "The initiative is maybe to promote football but deeply it is about using football as a tool of education and integration, social integration so this is good."
