Gracious Galleries: NOHRA HAIME GALLERY PIERALLI )(FAVI EXTRAKESTRAKOS July 20 - September 11, 2010
PIERALLI)(FAVI: EXTRAKESTRAKOS, a bold exhibition including a series of ambiguous three-dimensional mixed media works will be on view at the Nohra Haime Gallery from July 20th through September 11th. With an extraordinary wit and method, the Florentine duo Pieralli)(Favi, introduce staggering surfaces that combine painting, sculpture and installation. Made of acrylic, adhesives, nails and wood, the works are characterized by the enticing [brilliant] interplay of enigmatic forms and real space. Vibrant explosions and spewing remnants of energy-charged elements float and expand into the gallery's white wall. Hard-edged structures, interconnecting lines, and galaxy-like forms - reminiscent of a supernova explosion - expand and appear to be in action, expressing the artists' interest in the notion of transformation and change. The outbursts and cracks apparent in the compositions read as metaphors for breaking the mold, freeing your inner-self and moving forward. Although the forces of nature seek to push outward, Pieralli)(Favi are convinced that in reality all things are infinitely interconnected. This conception is manifested, for instance, in Return, 2009, where a network of lines directs the passage from one place to another, thus proving that the universe is ultimately a seamless web. And even though we are constantly in the quest for something different, in many instances the forces of nature conspire to make us return from our journey to former, familiar places. In this manner, with a remarkable contrast of freedom and control, as well as a sense of rhythm and balance, Pieralli)(Favi render change, the rites of passage, and the growth of process. The unexpected arrangement of the compositions and visual complexity of the surface itself, seduces the eye while engaging the mind. Xavier Pieralli, born in 1966, and Valentina Favi, born in 1974, are two Italian artists who from the beginning of their careers have created art together. It is in their collaborative relationship and renunciation of traditional individualistic artistic expression, that this pair has found their unique visual discourse and original language. Pieralli)(Favi represented their country at the Prague Biennale in 2003, and have had numerous exhibitions throughout Europe. They currently live and work in Florence.
