The Manhattan Smoke-Free Partnership
An organization new to us, that we think you should know about too:
The Manhattan Smoke-Free Partnership is a pro-health advocacy group dedicated to making New York City a smoke-free city. Including the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, and American Lung Association, they are comprised of numerous member organizations representing the richly diverse communities of Manhattan.
Unmet Need
Their mission is to prevent nearly 7,500 New York City residents from needlessly losing their lives each year due to tobacco use. The 2008 Community Health Survey identified 173,000 smokers (1/3 of N.Y.C. smokers) as residing in the borough of Manhattan. They believe that:
- It is unacceptable that each year 20,000 New York City children smoke cigarettes,
- of whom, one-third will die from the addiction.1
- Young and vulnerable populations deserve to be protected from tobacco industry target
- marketing.
Priority Issues
- Reduce exposure to second-hand smoke for all who live, work and play in NYC.
- Protect young people from tobacco industry target marketing.
- Protect the public from deceptive tobacco advertising practices and misinformation.
- Link New Yorkers to affordable, accessible cessation services.
What We Do
- Educate community and policy makers on the risks of tobacco use and second-hand smoke through distribution of credible, evidence-based information.
- Advocate for policy changes to better protect citizens from tobacco addiction and disease.
- Engage diverse communities and organizations in tobacco control.
