Our own Champagne Wishes panelists put this to the test, and they conclude:
When the first line of a book’s Introduction is, “Beer is perhaps the most indispensable substance ever known to man,” you know it’s a literary masterpiece. The Little Black Book of Beer from Peter Pauper Press is exactly that. From the history of beer to how it should be served, this book has it all. Ever wonder what the difference is between an ale and a lager? Well the answer to that question is in there, too! I especially enjoyed the glossary, to be honest. It’s only four pages of the 140 page book, but after reading it, I feel pretty confident that I can now throw around some fancy beer words with the best of ‘em! And here’s a little known fact that I learned: All beer that’s filtered is cold-filtered. Interesting, since it seems like there’s at least one company out there who pretty much brags about its cold filtering as if it was invented there and it’s the only company doing it. Tricky. I was also surprised to read the word “skunky” to describe spoiled beer, since I was pretty sure my older brother and his friends had invented THAT. Anyway, the book is fun – filled with trivia and conversation-making material. It’s the perfect gift for any guy or girl who enjoys a few cold ones now and then.
Before I picked up The Little Black Book of Beer, all I knew about the subject was that there is draft beer, bottled beer, root beer and birch beer. This handy, pocket sized book published by Peter Pauper Press, Inc. is packed full of interesting information about beer. An ice cold beer is perfect for these hot, humid days we have been having lately, but did you know it can be used as a conditioner for hair and and kills those pesty slugs that may appear in your garden. The book begins by giving us the history of how beer was discovered and the health benefits of the so called "liquid bread", such as the process of fermentation quadrupled the vitamins and minerals in barley and that yeast supplies even more vitamins and proteins. All of this vital information proves that beer keeps you healthy and happy at the same time, written proof here folks! The first brewsters were actually women, reverently called "goddesses" since they were held in high esteem for concocting these potent brews. When our forefathers arrived on the Mayflower in Plymouth, Massachusetts, one of the first things they built were brew houses that produced English Ale. The history lesson continues to the present day where we have our major breweries, a plethora of micro breweries popping up all over the country, and of course the home breweries, a growing trend. The Little Black Book of Beers describes the difference between ales and lagers in great detail. When you are done reading and absorbing the information in this book, you can become the Cliff Claven of your favorite bar. Cheers!!!
