After high school, Simioni studied graphic design at Sheridan College. In 1988 he was inspired to open a graphic design firm focusing on the beauty industry, creating marketing campaigns and advertising collateral for some of the world’s leading companies. After 15 years in the business Simioni made a discovery that would completely change the course of his career and his life.
A relative from Central America visited Simioni and left behind a baby food jar of brown oil. Calling it a native remedy for damaged hair and skin, he didn’t think much about it at the time.
For two years the jar sat untouched on a cluttered shelf. One day Simioni became curious about the dark-colored paste and decided to try it. The results were incredible. His background in beauty sent him on an adventure to learn everything he could about the mysterious oil.
The jar was purchased from a Central American Indian who traveled to the local market to sell the oil in Tegucigalpa, Honduras once a month. Derived from the nut of the Ojon® tree, the oil is unique to the rainforest of the Mosquitia region of Central America. Although the Miskito Indians had used Ojon® oil for centuries to condition and protect their hair and skin, it was never exported.
Before long, Simioni was on a plane to Central America to learn more about Ojon® oil from the people who know it best. He set out to find the Miskito, but didn’t know where to begin. A five-hour ride in a run-down single propeller plane landed Simioni on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. He hiked for two hours before meeting members of MOPAWI, a local non-profit group dedicated to promoting sustainable development in the La Mosquitia region. They told him the Miskito tribes who harvest the oil are called “Tawira”, which translates to "the people of beautiful hair™."
With more specific directions, Simioni and his crew embarked on a five-hour boat ride into the rainforest. He still recalls the experience with awe.
“It was like something out of National Geographic or an Indiana Jones movie. The tribes live just like they did 500 years ago. The land was pristine and unspoiled,” he says.
As the boat came ashore, Simioni knew he had found the Tawira.
“They all had remarkably healthy hair,” he says. “No one was wearing a hat.”
Speaking with the Tawira people, Simioni learned that they wear Ojon® oil in their hair all day, and use it as a body moisturizer. The Tawira were pleased to pass on all they knew about their rare, natural treasure. They demonstrated each step in the process of harvesting the Ojon® nuts and extracting the oil, which is done entirely by hand.
Simioni spent the next few years building a relationship with the Tawira while he tested various versions of Ojon®. In cooperation with MOPAWI, he developed a corporate partnership involving 895 indigenous families. Ojon Corporation obtained exclusive worldwide distribution rights for Ojon® oil, and a portion of profits is donated to Indigenous communities in La Mosquitia to help preserve their traditional lifestyle and the region's rainforests.
