An Update from our Mover and Shaker, Jessica Lappin!

From Jessica Lappin:

The Upper East Side has some of the dirtiest air in the city. You may already have learned that alarming fact after a citywide survey was released last December.

What you might not know is that the pollution comes largely from buildings that are burning dirty fuel – not from cars. That’s why I was proud to co-sponsor Intro 194A, a bill we are passing tomorrow in the City Council that will halve the amount of sulfur in heating oil, reduce the most harmful pollutants in our air by more than 16 percent, and require that all heating oil burned in the city must contain at least 2% biodiesel fuel. This bill will mean that we are effectively reducing the amount of petroleum burned in the city by 20 million gallons each year. This is a huge step toward making a cleaner and greener city.

In addition, my office will be working to educate residents about the steps they can take to help clean up their own buildings. I have prepared an educational packet that we will be distributing to many of the worst polluters in our community. You can find a copy of that packet by clicking here.  If we all work together, we can make great progress toward ensuring that our air is clean and safe to breathe.
