Petite Peachy: Whom You Know Recommends Disney Digital Books!

Oh how we LOVE Disney at Whom You Know.  When Peachy Deegan was a little girl, she was convinced she was Minnie Mouse and had the dress to prove it.  When she actually did meet Minnie at Disney World, it was one of the best days ever!  Disney is a staple of childhood, and their latest innovation is Disney Digital books.  We had our Petite Peachy Panel take a look, and here's what they thought:

The Future of Children’s Books. Disney Digital Books has launched a membership program that give you access to over 600 classic Disney Titles. I was a little skeptical as reading books with my child is a very special time for us. We cherish reading together and I love that my mother saved many of my own children’s books to pass down to her. However, this is a rather cool program and computers are here to stay. If adults are reading books on kindle and the iPad, my daughter might as well learn to read some books on the computer as well but I want there to be a happy medium. What’s great is that you have access to over 600 titles at the click of a button, far more than you could ever own or want too. You can choose titles by category or Disney brand or characters. They even have Spanish titles. So sign up today for every Disney book you could ever read available online at your fingertips.

I recently had the opportunity to check out Disney Digital Books, and I'm not going to lie - I was skeptical.  With all the technology available to children these days, I make a point of showing much more enthusiasm when I offer my daughter the opportunity to read a book with mom than I do when I respond to her requests to watch movies with me.  I don't like to use my cell phone in front of her - or God forbid text! - so I was not too inclined to introduce her to the world of books via computer.  When I finally took the time to check it out, though, I have to say I was impressed.  It's really not so different from the read-along cassettes I had as a kid, except it's way cooler.  First off, there are like 600 books available, and they range from the pre-reader level through chapter books and short novels.  Combine something like this with the convenience of a gadget like and iPad and you've got a portable children's library.  The annual subscription is $79.95 and that price would only deter someone who doesn't know first-hand how expensive children's books are these days.  I like that the site offers the option of reading along with your child or letting them choose from the "Look and Listen" set of books that work much like the read along cassettes.  Since my daughter is two and half, we've only done the "read with mom" thing, but I can see that as she gets more independent she will really enjoy following along on the pages while listening to the stories in the voices of some of her favorite characters.  I really recommend this site to families who already love to read together and also those parents who are trying to compete with all the technological distractions out there.  Maybe incorporating some technology is the way to go to get your kids interested.  If that's what it takes to get them reading, then so be it!  Right now, we're working our way through princess books and loving every minute of it.
