ooooh Peachy Deegan gets soooooo excited when Jo Malone does something new! And Peachy is pleased as punch with the Pear essence in this one! Jo Malone always impresses us and this is her biggest hit since the Valentine's Day collection we believe! But saying that is kind of like saying the Rock Shrimp Risotto at Swifty's is the best thing there-there is nothing on that menu that is not to die for and it's the same with the Jo Malone menu of fragrances-it's impossible to find something not to love.
Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit, the vines that round the thatch-eves run
(extract, ‘To Autumn’, John Keats)
Jo Malone announces the launch of English Pear & Freesia, a new cologne which distils an aspect of a landscape and a season that is indelibly etched on the British psyche. Inspired by one of the last great English Romantic poets and one of the most perfect short poems in English literature – Keats’s ode ‘To Autumn’ - English Pear & Freesia perfectly captures that fleeting moment of “mists and mellow fruitfulness” when the last days of summer are edged with fresh, clear autumnal airs. We love it. Perfume! Literary! What could be better.
The Art of the Perfumer
The Jo Malone Creative Studio selected award-winning Master Perfumer Christine Nagel to be its “nose” on the fragrance. Admired for her beautiful floral fragrances and experimental compositions, the cologne exemplifies her craftsmanship. “It’s unusual for a pear to take centre stage in a fragrance,” says Nagel, “but the essence of English Pear & Freesia is a complex and quintessentially autumnal pear note. My challenge was in recreating the scent of a pear captured just at that moment of perfect ripeness. We began by looking at the duality of the pear - the crisp texture of the skin versus the ripe, juicy fruit. You enter the fragrance immediately through the skin, just like when you bite the fresh fruit, and then directly after, the supple juicy pear. The full-bodied pear note is an innovative technical achievement.”
Combined with a honeyed, liquid note of quince, the pear is undercut with the delicate freshness of white freesias and scrambling wild roses. Base notes of patchouli, white amber and musk add a subtle warm undertone. An unconventional keynote of cool green rhubarb – acidic and at the same time soft – gives an unusual and distinctively modern sensibility to a classically understated and evocatively English fragrance.
The Jo Malone Olfactory Signature
Dominic De Vetta, Global General Manager at Jo Malone comments, “Jo Malone is the arbiter of a particular brand of Britishness: a combination of tradition with a modern spirit. English Pear & Freesia epitomises that. We have always worked with the most talented perfumers to create our scents, and Christine Nagel is a master of elegant, simple compositions that are the hallmark of Jo Malone fragrances. Here that translates into a certain insouciance in the association of well-known – even classic – ingredients. The result is a perfectly judged balance of notes, structured in a way that is very contemporary, very exciting, and very Jo Malone.”
The Fragrance:
The essence of Autumn, English Pear & Freesia is an evocative fragrance that captures the scent of just-ripe pears gathered in an English orchard.
The Key Notes in English Pear & Freesia:
King William Pear: A classic, crisp pear variety with a fruity-fresh first impression that mellows as the addition of quince in the heart of the scent adds warmth and depth.
White Freesia: Loved for its exquisitely fragrant flowers, supported on elegant branching stems, the scent of freesia is freshly green with a surprisingly soft depth.
Patchouli: An intensely woody, autumnal base note with a sweet-balsamic scent and spicy, earthy undertones.
The Art of Fragrance Combining™:
English Pear & Freesia is characterised by a certain transparency and simplicity, a sheerness that gives it a beautiful clarity when worn alone, but also lends itself perfectly to mixing, matching and layering. Jo Malone pioneered the concept of Fragrance Combining™ based on the philosophy of accessorising with scent and it’s at the heart of each Jo Malone creation. Lavish on a body crème and mist over a contrasting or complimentary cologne to create a bespoke scent to suit an occasion, a season, a mood or for a very personal signature fragrance.
Fragrance Combining™ suggestions:
For a sparkling, effervescent edge add Orange Blossom. The blend of lily, lilac and orange blossom cologne with the fresh fragrance of crisp, ripe pears gives a delicate, fruity-floral scent.
To add spiciness combine with Vetyver - English Pear & Freesia’s delicate freshness blends beautifully with the clean, soft notes of vetiver, cedarwood and musk.
To give masculine depth to English Pear & Freesia’s uplifting lightness, shade in notes of velvety dark woods and smoky incense with a dash of Black Vetyver Café.
