See Manhattan On Your Feet: Whom You Know Kicks Off Our Coverage of FitFlop! Be Smart and Be Beautiful With Your Feet.
Originally conceived as a cellulite fighting solution by former personal trainer and Bliss Spa Founder, Marcia Kilgore (who realized that juggling a job, two kids and ‘the gym’ was next to impossible) FitFlop Footwear is engineered–and proven–to activate your leg muscles more every single time you take a step. Peachy Deegan has been fitflopping all over Manhattan happily and is pleased to tell you that these are among the most comfortable and stylish sandal models we have ever encountered! The purple is very hot right now, as we've told you:
Dr David Cook and Darren James at London South Bank University (LSBU) designed the first FitFlop sandal in 2006, employing patent-pending MICROWOBBLEBOARD™ technology – a micro-version of that used by physical therapists to support rehabilitation and post-injury muscle strengthening. Moulded from ergonomically-maximized triple-density EVA, the FitFlop midsole slightly destabilizes the wearer’s foot while walking, forcing the supporting muscle groups to fire faster and kick start muscle-loading all the way up through the legs and bottom. Why not kill two birds with one stone? These are smart as well as beautiful, and deserving in the shoe collection of all Manhattan women.
The midsole features a: high density heel section that absorbs up to 22% more shock; low density mid section which increases leg muscle activation by up to 16%; mid density toe section that supports push off, turns and pace variation.* Within weeks of their launch in May 2007, testimonials started pouring in from the first FitFlop sandal wearers, detailing not only firmer thighs, toned up calves and a reignited love of walking, but surprise relief from chronic lower back aches, knee pain, ankle joint pain, hip joint stress, and plantar foot pain. An independent study uncovered the reason: FitFlop’s multi-density midsole causes a unique ‘floating’ phenomenon that almost instantly relieves underfoot hot spots often felt by sufferers of heel spurs or plantar fasciitis and regular wearers of high heels or hard soled formal shoes. Biomechanists Dr Philip Graham-Smith and Richard Jones at the University of Salford (UK) found that FitFlop’s FOOTFLOAT™ effect diffuses pressure over a greater surface area of the footbed, improving blood flow and attenuating chronic underfoot pressure (which–according to thousands of FitFlop wearer reports–alleviates chronic foot pain).
MICROWOBBLEBOARD technology creator Dr Cook commented that he “never imagined that such simplicity would alleviate so many musculoskeletal complaints”.
In 2007 Newsweek called FitFlop the ‘must-have item of the summer’, while The Independent (UK) hailed FitFlop sandals as ‘Miraculous’. A sparkling pair of FitFlop sandals made Oprah’s ‘list’ in 2008, and they’ve since been photographed on the feet of dozens of celebrities, including Julianne Moore, J Lo, Jennifer Garner, Marcia Cross, and Ali Hewson. We are so pleased to kick off our coverage of this brand, and we are more pleased to say we recommend it! We look forward to telling you what we think of the men's models next.
Up next for Fitflop that we hope to cover as well? As the original innovator in the field of fashionable functional footwear, “Incorporating the amazing FitFlop MICROWOBBLEBOARD midsole into all-year, all-weather, all-occasion (with the exception of the black-tie bound) shoes for men, women, and children is driving priority number one”, says Kilgore. “And fixing the world’s feet”, she continues “is in the passenger seat.”
