The First Major Event of Halloween Week in New York Central Park Conservancy’s Green Ball Will Celebrate in the Center of the City’s Greenest Space Picture an eerie mystical environment drenched in acid-like green light and filled with hidden treasures, much like The Park itself!
Mid-Central Park at 72nd Street: Led by Chairs and Committee members, including Patsy and Jeff Tarr,Gillian and Sylvester Miniter, Liz and Jeff Peek, John Stossel, Judy and John Angelo, Kristy andJonathan Korngold, Julie Wurts, Kipton Cronkite and Amy Tarr as well as CPC President Doug Blonsky, Chairman of the Board Thomas L. Kempner, NYC Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, and Emcee Lee Goldberg over 500 creatively costumed guests parade into a tented atmosphere, designed byFrank Alexander NYC. They feel like they are traversing a path through Central Park’s Ramble, dripping with branches and vines and dimly lit in an eerie green.
Past the portal, they are enjoying cocktails in a fog pierced with mystical lighting, engulfed in black fabric and spider webs. Crawling spiders abound on the large wooden bar and candlelit tables. Large cloud formations move across the ceiling, with a full harvest moon glowing in the background. Waiters in green-tie serve canapés including Steamed Lobster and Watercress Shu Mai, Jonah Crab Croquette with Guacamole and Lime, Spiced Lamb Gyro with Tzatziki and Pita Crisp, Berber Spiced Chicken with Marjoram and Charred Lemon and Smoked Bacon Gougere with Goat Cheese and Caramelized Onion.
Two grand wrought iron gates frame the entrance to the Foyer of the Dinner Tent, decorated with moss and accented with black crows. A secret passage leads into the magical dinner and dancing area, with massive weeping willow trees and projections of trees filing the air. There is a candlelit stage grounded by screens periodically flashing eyes and swamp plants. Hidden mythical creatures enhance the dance floor, which feels like a murky swamp via lighting and projections.
The mouth watering dinner menu created by Danny Meyer’s Union Square Events features a Honey-Roasted Quince Salad with Maytag Blue Cheese, Crushed Concord Grapes, Walnuts, Bitter Greens and Citrus Vinaigrette; Sullivan Street Bakery Breads with Vermont Creamery Cultured Butter; Pan-Seared Creekstone Farms Sirloin with Shallot-Cabernet Jus; and Chocolate Brioche Bread Pudding is served ontables dressed with arrangements of tree stumps, gnomes, fairies and tree huger creatures, surrounded by flickering candlelight and amber votives. Fine wines are generously provided by HobNob.
A team of celebrity judges, led by avant garde fashion designer Richie Rich review the costumes. Later, winners are announced in various categories. Fabulous prizes include luxurious stays in the romantic Surrey hotel on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, once the home of the likes of John F. Kennedy, Bette Davis, Claudette Colbert and Ethel Merman.
Best of all, the event is a major fundraiser for the Central Park Conservancy and its mission to maintain and preserve Central Park.
