READ THIS: Central Park Then and Now by Marcia Reiss
What would we ever do in Manhattan without Central Park? It is truly an oasis in a crazy, busy city and we love it. We work with The Central Park Conservency and recently covered The Green Ball:
Central Park Now and Then is a must-read for anyone that loves and appreciates this park of all parks! If you think you know everything there is to know, we're sure you will still learn something and as it has cooled down significantly in Manhattan, it is great to daydream about the lazy hazy days of summer in Central Park! You're going to wish you were in the rowboats on the cover, and then you'll open up to the title page to realize you really could be on your ice skates there now.
From the moment you open the front cover interesting aspects of this work await you: you'll gaze at the aerial picture of the park as it was being built and you'll try to imagine just where certain areas of what you are seeing have been developed into today.
What we like about this book more than anything is its fabulous photographs of the "then" and the "now" of the exact same spots and the wonderful history about the venue. This is really priceless and even Peachy is learning more! Did you know there used to be a Casino in Central Park? The archways, the bodies of water and the buildings that surround the park compose one of the greatest works of art together that the city knows. And of course the only building that has been added to the park (the arsenal was there prior to the park being built) is the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which itself is the best art museum around...and you can read all about it in Cultured Peachy: http://www.whomyouknow.com/search/label/Cultured%20Peachy
Whom You Know Highly Recommends Central Park Then and Now!

Arguably one of the best-known and most-visited urban parks in the world, Central Park was originally created to provide an open space for Manhattan's booming population to escape the noise and pollution of the busy city. Today, you'll still find New Yorkers (and millions of tourists!) languishing on the Park's lush lawns, jogging along its paths, skating on Wollman Pond, or riding the historic carousel. Visit this amazing park and its remarkable history in Central Park Then and Now. - Officially completed in 1873, Central Park is filled with man-made lakes, ponds, winding paths, pavilions, and attractive buildings. As the photographs show, many structures, including an old elevated railway, were removed to make room for the new park
- Compare the old Central Park Menagerie to the modern Central Park Zoo. In its early days, the park received many exotic animals as gifts and the Menagerie began to grow. A zoo building was designed to house the animals in 1934
- Come rub Balto's nose! This hero sled dog has achieved a polished golden appearance as generations of children have come to rub his nose for luck
- Although New York moves at a breakneck pace, inside Central Park time seems to stand still. The clothing may look different, but kids still play with sailboats at the boating lake, lovers still go for rides on Carriage Drive, and families still toboggan on the park's rolling hills
