Is there anything on a cold winter night in New York better than Guinness stew? The resounding answer is NO, and we are so glad we have found The East End. Much more than just a cool neighborhood bar, which although is Irish we'd say boasts a crowd that's more on the American side, The East End has really impressed us with their homestyle fare which is decidedly Irish. And, since Peachy used to live in Cork, we think we are qualified to say.
Shown above, the Guinness stew intrigued us when The East End was recommended to us by our readers, so we had to try it. Piping hot, the Guinness stew is joined by premium pork, potatoes, carrots and celery and its flavored by the black beer of St. James's Gate Brewery in Dublin (go back to Irish 101 if you don't know that that is the Guinness factory.) In over 200 posts in Champagne Wishes, Peachy Deegan now admits the only kind of brewery, distillery, or vineyard she's ever been to is the Guinness brewery because Guinness is a supremely important component of life, and we think they would love this stew.
The Shepard's pie is a classic. The photo is only a slice (Peachy's not the most neat slicer) and the beef, green beans, potatoes and more absolutely hit the spot. We're not sure we've ever had such a great Shepard's pie in Manhattan and the only one just as good was at Thady Con's on 2nd and 48th but that is no longer in business so we're pleased to locate this winner at The East End. Besides, it is great to order things you can't make well yourself and Peachy has never met a person on this side of the ocean that makes great Shepard's pie.
Shown above are the buffalo wontons, which although are not at all Irish, really are a nice bar food that would complement any meal. The people at The East End are professional and courteous, and they pay attention to detail which is crucial. Even the butter pats for the rolls were warmed. The House Salad was amazingly fresh and the best salad we've ever had from a bar, but you should know this is much more than a bar. Anyone that thinks bars don't produce great food would be sorrily mistaken at The East End, and we highly recommend it.
