THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND WHALE'S COMMUNITY RELATIONS by Bruce Berlet
Talk about a marriage made in heaven happening by happenstance.
Two years ago, Juan Nunez was working his way toward a degree in business management at the University of Hartford while holding down two jobs in Blue Back Square in West Hartford, including as a manager at It's A Grind coffee house.
While he was on duty one day, a familiar face walked in, and the always personable Nunez immediately struck up a conversation with Howard Baldwin, who was visiting from California during a break from his award-winning film-making business.
Baldwin was in the early stages of trying to revive a dream to run another National Hockey League team in Hartford. He had been part-owner and managing general partner of the World Hockey Association's New England Whalers and NHL's Hartford Whalers, and now, as perhaps his greatest trick in his life, he wanted to revitalize the local pro hockey market and get a NHL team back in the Insurance City.
As fate would have it, the guy behind the It's A Grind counter that day was Nunez, who grew up attending Whalers games but never really got to know any players.

NEW Whale Merchandise Available NOW!

Since its introduction just a short time ago, the Whale has been a hot seller.  Not only have larger crowds come out to watch the team, but Whale merchandise has been especially popular with local hockey fans as they welcome back the familiar green and blue colors.   The merchandise stands at the XL Center have had big crowds around them during games and sales have been brisk as fans purchase items such as Whale hats, t-shirts, hoodies, jackets, pucks, mini sticks, and even plush toy whales.  Whale merchandise can also be found at the Whale Pro Shop at the Hartford Holiday Store at 45 Pratt Street in downtown Hartford.  The Hartford Store is open 10-4 Monday through Saturday and 2 hours before every home game and also carries a unique selection of other Hartford-related merchandise.   Lastly, you can also shop with the Whale online at www.ctwhaleshop.com.   Happy shopping!
On behalf of Whalers Sports & Entertainment, I want to sincerely thank you for your support of the CT Whale.  Thanks to the faithful fans of Hartford hockey, the debut of the Whale was an overwhelming success!
