DAYLIGHT: The 4th Annual New York Wine Expo at the Javits Center

We attend many trade shows at Whom You Know, and among our favorite topics for a show is a show that is alcohol-related. Cipriani has a lovely one in 2009 and 2010 by Luca Maroni for Italian wine and that is a model most would love and we did, and we went to another one a year ago held at the Waldorf-Astoria that was not offered to the public that was quite nice too!   This show, however, was offered to the public so it has a different atmosphere than a professional show.

What Peachy Deegan liked about the 4th Annual New York Wine Expo was that it is the first alcohol-related trade show she's attended since the advent of the famed Peachy Deegan Express created by Robert Caravaggi of Swifty's made with Star Vodka. So, she felt quite like the daughter of Mercedes at a car show as she walked around shaking hands telling everyone her name and that they could drink her. Mercedes you ask? Mercedes Benz was started by two people, Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz. They had separate companies at first, and Daimler's company was named Mercedes after the daughter of his first major customer (who ordered that the cars in his order be named after his daughter). The name for those custom cars caught on, so the company bore the name as well. When the two companies merged, the car was called mercedes-benz, but that is also why the company was officially called Daimler-Benz and then DaimlerChrysler.

For wine lovers in the New York region, the Javits Center was the place to be this past weekend! With an array of over 760 wines representing Italy, Austria, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, South America, Austalia, Canada, South Africa and the United States, there was something for everyone…and then some!    The educational aspects appeal to the public-we believe most may not know of the pinotage grape (which is the result of a cross between the Pinot Noir and Cinsault grapes) and one has the opportunity to learn about this while visiting the tables of some South African winemakers. Some of the standouts of the afternoon were the PerryMoore Cabernet Sauvignons. With rich, fruity flavors of black currant and black cherry and a smooth finish, these were some of the best wines we tasted all afternoon. Other favorites included the Social Club Red, which is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Syrah. An easy-drinking red, it does live up to its name – it would be a terrific “house wine” for any kind of party! In addition to the countless wines, we also enjoyed the offerings of some of the other presenters – in particular, the horseradish cheddar cheese from Cabot Creamery – delicious!  Overall, a highly enjoyable afternoon at the 4th Annual New York Wine Expo!
