Fall 2011 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center: Academy of Art University in San Francisco
The School of Fashion at Academy of Art University in San Francisco is pleased to announce that this season’s show marks the 10th show during New York Fashion Week. At Whom You Know we think it is important to showcase up and coming designers that are showing in Lincoln Center-in a way if they are doing that, they HAVE made it. In addition to the anniversary show comes the news that Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week will use fashion illustrations by Gladys Perint Palmer, Executive Director of the School of Fashion at Academy of Art University, for their seasonal graphics for the Fall 2011 event at Lincoln Center. Peachy Deegan attended this show and was impressed with Minha Yoon's sleek, sharp fine lines and Jonathan David Barker's style attitude in black-he is going places. As the penultimate designer shown, you can see they were almost saving the best for last. The clean lines by Jonathan were graphic, optical, and most importantly would be flattering on most women to actually wear. Some of the other designers horrified us with frumpy black winter hats when they should have been using Rodney Cutler to do their hair...put some makeup on if you are going to walk the catwalk for sure!
Since 2005, the School of Fashion has premiered the collections of recent graduates during New York Fashion Week. “Part of our commitment to the graduate designers is to help launch their careers and have their collections seen by as many industry professionals as possible,” said Dr. Elisa Stephens, President of Academy of Art University. “Debuting their collections during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center is an incredible opportunity, especially since the national and international fashion community are gathered in New York City during that time.” Collections shown throughout the years include those from graduates who studied in the areas of Fashion Design for Women’s Wear, Men’s Wear, and Children’s Wear, as well as Technical Design, Textile Design, Knitwear Design, and Accessory Design.

Holly Smith grew up in Oregon and California. She worked in product development at Coach before pursuing a M.F.A. in Fashion Design at the Academy. The Double Crested Cormorant, a water diving bird, inspired her women’s collection of leather, wool, and wool jersey. The Cormorant’s long sleek neck and movements diving in and out of the water are symbolized in hooded garments, details and seams. The hourglass silhouette with broad shoulders is representative of the female athletes who were Holly’s muses.
