Terrific Takeout: Bistro 61!

Previously we featured Marche du Sud which was so outstanding and inspirationally French:

So, we decided to explore a few blocks beyond that and we came upon the cousin of Marche du Sud, Bistro 61.  Bistro 61 is the older and more established cousin....

Le Steak Frites is Le Big Hit with Peachy Deegan!  This is what she absolutely lives for in a French Bistro. You will fall in love with what is on your plate in 0.001 seconds and you may not even be able to get home with your takeout before you start eating the french fries.  The hanger steak is natural from Upstate New York and is so lean and flavorful you will wind up dreaming about it for days afterwards.  It was cooked perfectly and was a prime example of how Bistro 61 pays attention to doing basic french bistro cuisine in an extraordinary way.   Also we love how much Chef Anthony Raggiri pays attention to all details.  This came with four sauces which we tried and they were wonderful-and each was labeled.  We love love love labels: green peppercorn, porcini, mustard, blue cheese....
The French onion soup was to die for.  You can see from the steam in the picture that it was still hot when we arrived at home base and if Peachy didn't love eating hot soup so much it might have made it to live through a nonsteam picture, however she does love eating hot soup.  Again, details mattered here.  They were so smart to pack the croutons and cheese on the side so when you are home you can then put them together and avoid any possible sogginess, which is of course a fact of life with croutons and soup as time passes.  We loved the French Onion soup.
For our salad we tried a special of the night: Flamed with Cognac, chicken liver, assorted mushrooms (portobello, porcini, shitaki, white all joined the party!), a poached egg, and a goat cheese crustini!  Very creative.
Truly authentically French, this is a salad to order if it's on the specials menu!
And you know what they're saying about if you eat 9 fruits and vegetables a day you'll keep cancer at bay...mixed greens come with the steak frites and they are fresh and delicious.
And then it was time for dessert.
This fruit salad is what most restaurants should work towards for dessert for the health of America.  You notice French people do not get fat-you know we reviewed that book, and every book Mireille Guiliano has written for that matter-and she is a Mover and Shaker: http://www.whomyouknow.com/2009/10/movers-and-shakers-mireille-guiliano.html
The fruit was fantastically fresh which is impressive as all of it is out of season in Manhattan now...Bistro 61 is Terrific Takeout!!!
