NYCREW Discusses Emily Roebling as a "Woman Shaping New York" at March 15 Panel
NYCREW Network will celebrate women's history in March by examining the critical role Emily Warren Roebling played in one of New York's most recognizable landmarks by hosting "Women Shaping New York," a Leading Ladies' event discussing the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. The discussion will be held on Tuesday, March 15th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the offices of Ted Moudis Associates, 79 Madison Avenue, New York City.
Kristian Roebling, a member of the board of directors of The Roebling Museum will tell attendees about the daily involvement of his great-great-grandmother in the construction of the bridge. Joining him will be Claire Weisz and Andrea Woodner, founders of The Design Trust for Public Space, a not-for-profit organization that brings together neighborhoods, public agencies and design professionals to improve the city, and Courtney Clark, a project engineer for Weidlinger Associates. Moderating the panel will be Wanda Bubriski, executive director of Beverly Willis Architecture.
"Anyone familiar with New York’s history knows of John Roebling's and Washington Roebling's challenges to design and build the Brooklyn Bridge. Fewer know that Washington Roebling's wife, Emily, was instrumental in completing this project when her husband was disabled. She conveyed his instructions and in effect became an engineer herself to supervise the building," says Karen Dome, NYCREW 2011 president and a senior associate at Marcus & Millichap in Brooklyn. "We're thrilled to have Washington and Emily Roebling’s great-great-grandson with us to share this important story, and to have Claire Weisz, Andrea Woodner, Courtney Clark and Wanda Bubriski to put this story into today's context. After all, Design Trust works on the most exceptional projects, including Reclaiming the High Line, 'Reinventing Grand Army Plaza,' and 'Made in Midtown.' We’re also very thankful to Ted Moudis Associates for hosting this, the first Leading Ladies event of the year, in their offices."
Attendees must register by 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 11th to receive the advance registration rate of $50 for NYCREW members, $65 for CREW chapter members, $95 for nonmembers and $30 for graduate students. Onsite registration will be available for an additional $20. For more information, and to register, visit http://nycrew.org/
