THE NEW YORK CITY POLICE MUSEUM OPENS AN EXHIBIT COMMEMORATING THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MOTORCYCLE SQUAD ON “THE NYPD MOTORCYCLE SQUAD: A CENTURY OF SERVICE TO NEW YORK CITY” Explore the fascinating history of one of the most storied units in New York City’s Police Department

The New York City Police Museum will present a multi-media exhibition on the 100th anniversary of NYPD’s Motorcycle Squad.   Travel back in time when vintage department-used motorcycles, including the collection’s late 1940’s-model classic red Indian Motorcycle and a late 1960’s- model silver Harley,  led highway patrols, street crime fighting units, peace officers and presidential/dignitary motorcades through decades of New York City’s streets and highways.

The exhibit - on view from May 16th through January 9th, 2012 – will also feature photographs of The NYPD’s Motorcycle Squad in action, memorabilia including the squad’s leather jackets, 1950’s-era early speed detection devices and many other artifacts. Visitors will also enjoy original 1960s and 1970s footage of the motorcycle squad in action paired with oral history interviews.

Some of the exhibition highlights include images of the first Papal visit to New York in 1965 and Fidel Castro’s historic visit to the United Nations General Assembly meeting in 1960.
