News from Lime Rock Park: Ferrari Challenge Facts, with a Dash of Fun

With Ferrari Challenge returning to Lime Rock Park Saturday, July 30, we did some digging and unearthed some interesting facts that we thought the media would like to know.

Wait... Don’t know what Ferrari Challenge is?

It’s simple, but very cool: Owners of a Ferrari model that’s legal for each year’s Ferrari Challenge – this year it’s the new 458 Italia, plus a separate class for the 2006-2010 F430 – have their cars race-prepped and sponsored by a North American Ferrari dealer. Then the owners, many of whom do a Skip Barber Three Day Racing School to get their competition license, race for fame, glory and trophies across the U.S. and Canada. Ferrari Challenge is sanctioned by Grand-Am, the NASCAR-owned sports car racing entity. Pro drivers are not allowed in Ferrari Challenge, so there’s a wonderful diversity of talent up and down the grid.

The Ferrari Challenge was created first in Europe in 1993. In 1994, Ferrari decided it wanted a North American series. (Of course, Ferrari chose Lime Rock to be on the schedule that first year...) The series ran the Ferrari 348 in 1994-95, then switched to the F355 for 1996-1999. From 2000 through 2005, the 360 was the chosen stallion. The switch to the F430 was in 2006, and beginning this year, it’s the new 458 Italia, plus the 430. What you’ll see here at Lime Rock July 9 is a combined grid of two classes: F430 and 458

In conjunction, Ferrari runs the Shell Historics Ferrari Challenge; a separate group of racers running older Ferraris.

What you’ll see at Lime Rock Park Sat., July 30, are four total races: two for the F430/458 group, and two for the Shell Historics.

Ok, back to some fun facts about Ferrari Challenge at Lime Rock Park...

* The last time the non-historic Ferrari Challenge ran at Lime Rock was 2005; in 2006, the Ferrari Historic Challenge races were here, in a shared race-day with the Ferrari Club of America

* A woman driver of a certain note, Milka Duno, finished 12th, fifth (in an enduro race) and eighth in the 1999 FC races at Lime Rock

* You guys know who Vijay Mallya is? The Indian liquor baron and owner of the Force India F1 team? Yeah, him. In 1999, he finished 26th and 28th in his two races here (he didn’t do the enduro)

* Paul Newman entered a Ferrari Challenge weekend, but he had some issues, finishing 27th in both races. Anyone remember what year that was?

* Are any of you media folk out there also rock music fans? For those that say “yes,” did you know that rock drummer Nigel Olsson (Uriah Heep, Elton John) raced at Lime Rock in Ferrari Challenge in 1994 (finishing 16th and 12th)?

* Can we drop one more name? Derek Hill, the late Phil Hill’s son and 1997 Barber Dodge Pro Series champion, did the Ferrari Challenge race at Lime Rock in 1995. Finished second...
