READ THIS: THE SIXTH MAN By David Baldacci

Oooh how we love a great page turner for the summer and since we have read all of the Conor Bard stories which are the best, we needed to find something new to entertain us while we lounge on the beach or at the park...and we found it with The Sixth Man!  And though you may have your feet up and be sipping on some iced tea, the escapades of this duo will leave you happily exhausted as you read about their high-excitement life and intense career-much better that they experience it than you.  After all, your life is presumably exciting enough if you are a resident of Manhattan!  After about 100 pages Peachy could not put it down, and the twists and turns it takes will astound even those that think they can predict every nook and cranny of a plot.  We can't wait to see what David comes out with next, and our panelist adds:

The Sixth Man by David Baldacci has to be my new favorite summer read.  I was hooked from the beginning.  His characters, Sean King and Michelle Maxwell return in this book.  I felt I didn't need to read any of the previous books they have been the main characters of to follow how well these characters work together.  I am excited to go back and read them though.  I always have enjoyed when authors like David Baldacci create stories that keep bringing characters like Sean King and Michelle Maxwell back.  It gives their writing more depth and readers feel like they can connect with them.  The plot was nail biting.  With the main characters on the hunt for a serial killer, I found it to be a page turner.  I wanted to keep reading well into the night.  I was talking to some friends of mine recently and I couldn't stop talking about how they needed to go out and get this book.

Whom You Know recommends The Sixth Man by David Baldacci!  This is our first book by this author and it won't be our last.

Following David Baldacci’s #1 New York Times bestseller, First Family, comes another action-packed thriller in his popular King and Maxwell series, THE SIXTH MAN (Grand Central Publishing; April 19, 2011; $27.99 hardcover), a super-charged story involving the highest levels of national security and the most cutting-edge intelligence master plan ever conceived.

This time, private investigators Sean King and Michelle Maxwell are tasked with helping to defend alleged serial killer Edgar Roy.  A federal case, Roy is being held at Cutter’s Rock, a maximum security mental facility located off the coast of Maine.  Ted Bergin, King’s old law professor and Roy’s attorney, has asked Sean to look into the case.  But as King and Maxwell navigate Maine’s isolated back roads to meet Bergin, they encounter foul play before they even arrive—a car pulled over with Bergin’s body shot dead in the driver’s seat.  The ensuing investigation puts our sleuths head-to-head with the FBI, Maine State Police, the imperious director of Cutter’s Rock, and national security personnel at the highest levels.

Meantime, Peter Bunting is in the fight of his life.  He is the inventor of the most revolutionary intelligence strategy ever conceived, one that requires all intelligence agencies to share what they know.  However, there are those in D.C. who want no part of this; they prefer the world where everyone controls their own piece of the program.  Secretary of Homeland Security Ellen Foster is from this “old school” mentality and, thus, she goes toe-to-toe with Bunting.  King and Maxwell eventually cross paths with these masterminds when they uncover Roy’s connection to Bunting’s top-secret network, presenting them with even more questions to answer.

Did Edgar Roy kill six unidentified men buried in his barn in rural Virginia?  What secrets in his past have led his genius mind to be rendered catatonic under Cutter’s Rock’s watch?  Who is behind Bergin’s death and the rash of other murders that unfold from the hamlets of coastal Maine to our nation’s capital?  And what will everyone involved risk to stay one step ahead in the complex web of national defense?  As King and Maxwell draw closer to unraveling these mysteries, the lingering question on readers’ minds will be: could this deadly case be their last one together?

With THE SIXTH MAN, David Baldacci has spun an intricate caper, showcasing his insider knowledge of law enforcement, classified intelligence operations, and the sophisticated nanotechnology put into play every day in the pursuit of homeland security.
