US Open Golf Champion visits Concern Learning Center in Haiti
Concern tells Peachy Deegan:
As an ardent golfer, I am delighted to share this story with you. US Open Golf Champion Rory McIlroy has played on many of the world's most luxurious and well known courses, but he recently left that world far behind to travel to Haiti to witness earthquake recovery efforts in Port-au-Prince.
During his two-day trip with UNICEF, Rory visited one of Concern Worldwide’s temporary learning centers, as well as a health center. Rory met children and families whose homes were destroyed in the January 2010 earthquake.
The earthquake damaged or destroyed 87 percent of the schools in Port-au-Prince, which will cost about $627 million to repair or rebuild. One in every two children in Haiti is not enrolled in school.
Working in collaboration with the Haitian Ministry of Education and UNICEF, Concern is providing education for children in Port-au-Prince in Temporary Learning Centers. For displaced children living in temporary shelters, these are sanctuaries from the daily hardships of camp life. Concern provides these children with psychological support, education, and time for play, song, dance and. While these temporary solutions are vital to meet the immediate education needs in Haiti, Concern is committed to contributing to a longer term solution.
Even before the devastating earthquake, access to primary education was limited in Haiti. Net school enrollment stood at 76 percent at the primary education level, while 80 percent of schools were privately-run and thus unavailable to poorer families.
Concern’s program “Investing in Schools and Quality Education” is providing education to over 1,000 students in Port-au-Prince. Concern will rebuild two schools that were almost completely destroyed, and work with local professionals to train 40 teachers and school officers. We will also provide sources of clean water and latrine facilities and provide a first-year salary subsidy to teachers.
Prior to the emergency, Concern worked with 30 primary schools in Saint Martin, one of the poorest slum communities in Port-au-Prince, reaching a total of 6,438 children.
Having people such as Rory visit Haiti continues to keep a spotlight on the situation here and the importance of the work agencies like Concern are doing every day.
