Peachy Picks Anatolia
Anatolia is a brand new Turkish Mediterranean spot on the upper east side, just perfect to get a bite at when you are visiting the movie theatre across the street or swinging by nearby Bed Bath & Beyond. Their creative cuisine and friendly staff led by owner Ufuk Kurt and highlighted by Anastasia will put a smile on your face!
Anatolia was first featured in Terrific Takeout:
And it graduated to Tasty Tidbits:
http://www.whomyouknow.com/2011/09/tasty-tidbits-anatolia.htmlWe are pleased to say it has earned a spot in Peachy's Picks. We began with the lobster ravioli, immediately above, a treat to the rainy night we were experiencing and they were comforting and delicious. At the top is the array of the hot appetizer plate featuring falafel, sigara Borek, Liver, Zucchini, Pan Cake and Fried Calamari. In our first feature of Turkish food, this change from the status quo in terms of cuisine was terrifically fun to try.
For her main course, Peachy tried the Filet of Tilapia which was oven baked fresh just right. The fish was flaky and moist and isn't this Mediterranean cuisine what the health experts are telling us we all should be eating? Joined by fresh sauteed okra and tomato sauce, this was a creative combination that will mix up your perhaps otherwise routine Manhattan dinners, kicking it up a notch.
For dessert, we tried the homemade baked rice pudding and this turkish version hit the spot. It was sweet and delicious and again, another interesting departure from the standard New York dessert menu. The Katayif Pistachio was also exquisite and seemed quite healthy as well as it incorporated shredded wheat. The wine list at Anatolia is quite good as well and we really enjoyed the Douglas Green Shiraz 2009 from South Africa. Don't listen to just Peachy though!
Our esteemed panelist adds:
On a dreary, rainy and unseasonable cold Tuesday night in September, Peachy Deegan and I ventured out to Anatolia, Ufuk Kurt's Turkish restaurant, We were greeted warmly by Anastasia, Mr. Kurt's loyal and cheerful waitress. Dinner began with a hot fresh bread served with a spicy dipping sauce and a tasting of several of the house wines. Of the wines, our preference was the South African Douglas Green Shiraz. All house wines were reasonably priced at 8.00 per glass. We then chose two appetizers, first a home made lobster ravioli in tomato sauce and then the hot appetizer platter. The hot appetizer platter consisted of many fried Turkish delights - falafel, zucchini fritters and fried liver to name a few. Of the two appetizers, my favorite was the lobster ravioli which could easily have served as a small main course. Next came the main courses. We both chose fish entrees. I enjoyed the grilled bronzini with green salad which was very well priced at $21.00.
Finally we sampled two very good desserts - a baked rice pudding with a toasted marshmallow topping and the Turkish Katayif pistachio dessert . My favorite was the Katayif pistachio confection. Anatolia's proprietor Mr. Kurt was charming and eager to please. Anatolia is a pleasant well priced option for those interested in sampling a little bit of Turkish cuisine in New York City.
