Broadway Alert: Whom You Know Highly Recommends Love, Loss and What I Wore Starring Concetta Tomei Until Sunday, October 30th, 2011

Oooh you don't see too many Broadway Alerts on Whom You Know...because Peachy Deegan is absolutely superpicky about what she recommends particularly in this arena.  Who wants to sit still for this long when it's not the New York Rangers?  YOU DO, if you are going to see Love, Loss and What I Wore Starring the fabulously talented Concetta Tomei as Gingy.  You have to scoot on this too because she is in it everyday up to and including next Sunday, October 30th.  Get on your tickets!!!

Why do we love you Love, Loss and What I Wore?  Let us count the ways.   First of all, anyone with a heart, body and pulse is emotionally connected to their beloved fashion items they sport each day, unless you are AMISH.  And in that case, you probably didn't dress like Madonna ever either...you know you loved Madonna at some stage and dressed like her too or you are LYING.   Peachy does have about 50 multicolored jelly bracelets somewhere...You will find this out at the show-and the Madonna part was one of the very best.  Another favorite was the dialogue with their closet...and if you are female in Manhattan you know you can never get enough closet space.  Five women dressed in black will spend the evening regaling you in a way that you haven't quite seen before-this is totally for the Sex and The City crowd, perfect for girls, and we would not recommend this for men unless they are extremely, EXTREMELY in touch with their feminine side.  We did see a few men in the audience but in all honesty Peachy cannot think of any men she hangs out with or is related to that would "get" this show.

Gingy faces all kinds of tough choices in life: which of the two navy dresses are best for her 13th birthday?  Both of them, of course!  Gingy even wears a PEACHY dress to a dance at Choate (Wallingford) and you know how fabulous we think prep schools are...and she gets her wedding dress at Filene's Basement.  You know who did a TERM PAPER on Filene's Basement when she took a class on Boston businesses...With a sparkle on her shoulders, Tomei delivers a performance that is spot-on in language, delivery, connection with her audience, and collegial with her castmates.  From left to right, here is how we liked each one.  Gingy-Concetta Tomei our FAVORITE.  Zuzanna Szadkowski-we loved how you jumped up and down in the church bathroom to see how your wedding dress looked for the priest.  You were the most hilarious of the cast.  Dee Hoty and La La Anthony had amazing accents!  Dee you have such a good story about your purse!  We know every time one gets a new purse that THIS TIME it is different.  La La, we loved the dress you were wearing you had the best outfit.  Samantha Mathis was tremendous throughout and delivered a poignant story on breast cancer that touched everyone, and another on a bathrobe.  Her back and forth with fat and thin with Zuzanna was very real.  We would have had more to say but if you have ever tried it you know it is hard to take notes in the dark and if you spoke into a tape recorder you'd be disruptive!   In a nutshell, go see the show.

The simplicity of the set tells us these designers behind the scenes know less is more and they are successful in this.  But everyone knows when the distractions such as scenery and costume are not  overwhelming the production, the acting is highlighted that much more and a good thing too as they've got the perfect cast in place.

We would have liked more language on shoes-you know who is obsessed with them...and we wish we could see the shoes the five women were wearing -we'd like to comment on them- but you know Peachy Deegan is vertically challenged.  The best scene in the show?  When Gingy spoke of her granddaughter dressing in her clothes and wondered if she would remember her.  Of course she will we would say, and when you see Concetta Tomei as Gingy, you will remember her too.  You may even find out her art talents supercede acting alone.  And she has great taste in hats.  Whom You Know Highly Recommends Love, Loss and What I Wore!  We can't wait to see what Concetta Tomei does next.
