Sotheby's Impressionist & Modern Art Sales Total Nearly $230 Million in New York
Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art Day Sale concluded this afternoon in New York with a total of $29,907,150. This brings the cumulative total for Sotheby’s November sales of Impressionist & Modern Art to a strong $229,711,650 – exceeding the May 2011 results by nearly $60 million.
“We are pleased with the results of today’s sale, which demonstrated the continued appetite among collectors for exceptional works that have been estimated attractively,” commented Molly Ott Ambler, Vice President and Head of Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art Day Sales and Elizabeth Goldberg, Senior Vice President and Senior Specialist in Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art department. “Nine out of the top ten works in the auction outperformed their pre-sale high estimates, and we are particularly encouraged by the four diverse works that exceeded $1 million. From Henri Fantin-Latour’s still-life Lilas from 1872, which achieved $1,370,500, to Diego Giacometti’s bronze console Hommage à Böcklincirca 1978 that sold for $1,314,500, rare works across a wide range of styles and genres were pursued with enthusiasm. Following last night’s sale, we were honored to offer additional property from The Israel Museum, Jerusalem, led by Renoir’sBuste de femme, chapeau de paille garni that brought $1,082,500.”
