Sotheby's Results: American Paintings Led by Marsden Hartley & George Catlin
Today’s auction of American Paintings, Drawings & Sculpture at Sotheby’s New York brought $24,557,750 in total, above a low estimate of $22.3 million and with 71.2% percent of the lots sold. Seven works brought prices above $1 million, led by Marsden Hartley’s Untitled (Still Life) that achieved $3,218,500. Five bidders competed for the work, driving the price to more than three times its high estimate of $900,000.
Four paintings of Native Americans by 19th century artist George Catlin brought $4,576,000 in total, led by Interior of a Mandan Lodge that sold for $1,538,500 above a high estimate of $1.2 million. On offer from The Field Museum in Chicago, the works were originally in the collection of Benjamin O’Fallon – nephew of William Clark and the ‘United States Indian Agent’ for the Missouri River Tribes.
