Many years ago, after college and again after several years in retail management in Washington, DC, Jackie Edelmann Frankstone had the good fortune to travel extensively including a big trip to Europe and then another all the way around the world, lots of time in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the California desert and on the South Carolina coast. She wanted to build her life around things she truly loves ... nature, other cultures, architecture and craft and history, photography and exploring. Then came marriage and a move to New York, more work in retail management, buying and product development.
Stone + Mann was started somewhere in the middle of all this. Originally launched as a small accessories import business, the business needed additional products. So Jackie designed and whipped up some quick scarf and evening wrap samples, made successful visits to stores in NYC, enjoyed a lucky meeting with a young woman starting a fashion accessories showroom in Japan and so it began.
After many years designing scarves, wraps and handbags -- drawing on the shapes of Burmese pagodas, the colors of the desert, the cobblestone patterns on old New York City streets -- and working with boutiques and department stores across America and Japan, including Barneys New York, Anthropologie, Felissimo and Nordstrom, Jackie and her family relocated to the beautiful Hudson Valley town of Tarrytown, NY.
Stone + Mann now offers a full collection of scarves, wraps and pillows. In addition to designing original prints, Jackie is currently working on a collection of handbags, totes and computer cases.
One of the family's favorite books is a children's book called Miss Rumphius, in which a girl grows up to realize her personal ambitions to travel and live by the water and, most importantly, to fulfill her grandfather's wish that she do something to make the world more beautiful. Stone + Mann Design, Inc. is Jackie's way of responding to that same set of ambitions. Peachy Deegan interviewed Jackie Edelmann Frankstone for Whom You Know.
Peachy Deegan: What products did you love most growing up?
Jackie Edelmann Frankstone: I loved my Raggedy Ann and my Snoopy stuffed animal, and any other product I could use to play store with my sister -- especially food products!
Out of all of the places you've traveled, what has influenced you the most and why?
It's a tie between Paris -- where everyone seems to have a great style and a great joie de vivre, and Myanmar -- because it was open so briefly, and the people make such beauty in the midst of such poverty.
What or who has had the most influence on your pursuit of excellence?
That has to be my husband! Being a perfectionist is not in my nature, so he helps push me to do my best, see if that's really my best, and then do even better.
What are you proudest of and why?
I am most proud of raising what seems to be a happy, healthy, well-adjusted set of children.
What would you like to do professionally that you have not yet had the opportunity to do?
I would like to do private label for some great American designers.
What is your favorite shop in Manhattan?
Gallery Vercon in the East Village -- a treasury of jewelry, clothing and accessories, including mine, of course!
What is your favorite drink?
Champagne.
What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you at a cocktail party?
Hmmm, I don't get out much. But it has to be when I was pregnant with my first child and kept bumping into everyone with my stomach -- and that was without drinking any champagne!
Who would you like to be for a day and why?
An airplane pilot. I wonder what it really feels like to be in control of a plane.
If you could have dinner with any person living or passed, who would it be and why?
It would be a lot of fun to have dinner with Julia Child and hear first-hand about her adventures around the world. I wouldn't even ask her to cook!
What do you personally do or what have you done to give back to the world?
I volunteer my time at schools and with the Girl Scouts. And professionally, I'm always looking for new ways to use local talent to produce my designs.
Other than Chez Peachy of course, what is your favorite Whom You Know column and what do you like about it?
The Made in the USA column is so great. As an American designer and businesswoman, I am always looking for other American businesses to support. I have learned about so many new resources this way!
Have you drank The Peachy Deegan yet and if not, why not?
Not yet as I have only recently learned about the fantastic concoction! I must get the recipe and try it at home!
What else should Whom You Know readers know about you?
They should know that I aim to beautify the world one accessory at a time!
How would you like to be contacted by Whom You Know readers?
The most reliable way to contact me is directly through e-mail: jackie@stoneplusmann.com or by clicking the contact link on my website www.stoneplusmann.com.
