No. 3 LONDON DRY GIN – A TASTE OF TRADITION HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BY WHOM YOU KNOW
A prep like Peachy would not be without her gin, and did you know it is her cousin Andy Deegan's most favorite thing to drink? Our Champagne Wishes panel which reviews all alcohol raves about No. 3 London Dry Gin:
Gin is always my alcohol of choice. Gin and tonics are my absolute favorite cocktail, and I love trying any other mixed drink that has gin in it. I am also always on the lookout to find brands of gin I have not tried before. I now have a new favorite brand - No. 3 London Dry Gin. This gin has a strong juniper flavor that I really enjoy. It is crisp and clean and has a nice citrus finish. It is the gin to use for that perfect gin and tonic you look forward to at the end of a long week. It even comes in a really cool bottle! The dark green glass is very appealing, and the bottle has an old-fashioned key embedded on the front. I like to think of it as the key to unlocking the perfect gin and tonic!
Well to be perfectly honest, I have not drank gin since 1994. Let's just leave it at freshman year tennis team initiation, shots of gin followed by morning after stories I never want my children to hear. So needless to say, having to review NO 3 London Gin made my body quake. As I approached the box, I tried to keep an open mind. As I pulled out the box I immediately fell in love with the bottle. It is so visually pleasing with an antique coin pressed into the glass. Was this the key to my renewed love of gin? It definitely got me into a new mind set. As I popped the cork, the immediate scent of juniper crept out of the bottle. Yes, the unique smell of a good gin. So onward and upward. Mixed with some good tonic I slowly sipped to find wow this gin seemed so pure and clean. Usually gin seems to be overloaded with other favors and spices that wreck the juniper taste. I could taste some under tones of citrus fruit but ultimately simple and delectable notes that impressed me. This gin is for gin lovers with the most discriminating tastes.
St. James Street in London, England is in the fashionable district of the City of Westminster. The area is now mostly commercial, containing some of the highest-value rental properties in the world. This district has for centuries been home to fine tailors, cigar merchants and wine and spirit merchants. 'No. 3 London Dry Gin' gets it's name from No. 3 St. James Square, home of Berry Brothers and Rudd, London's oldest merchants in the distilled drinks business. Every time you take a sip of this exquisite liquid, you are reminded of horse-drawn carriages, gentlemen doffing their hats at well-dressed ladies and all that represents...or not. This drink can stand out in it's own right for it's wonderful flavors: The word Gin refers to the Juniper fruit, originally from Italy and although this drink has actually been manufactured for centuries in the capital city of the UK 'London' in the title refers to a particular type of gin where there is a minimal amount of added sweetening. It also contains lavender, pine, grapefruit peel and orange peel to give it a distinctive flavor. This dry gin also contains three spices: Angelica root, corlander seed from Morocco, and cardamom pod. All add together to make No. 3 a wonderful indulgence suitable for any occasion.

Moroccan Coriander seed releases a lemon flavour during distilling as well as adding a spicy, slightly peppery finish.
Grapefruit peel provides an extra lift of citrus.
Cardamom pods add a spicy, aromatic, yet warm bite.
Great care has been taken to determine the right recipe, source the finest ingredients and work with highly experienced distillers and experts to produce an impeccable gin at 46% ABV.
“No.3 is unmistakably traditional London Dry Gin,” says David King, Creator of No.3. “By traditional we mean gin that tastes as gin should, with juniper at its heart. We are determined that No.3 will be the last word in gin for a Dry Martini. To achieve this we collaborated with one of the world’s authorities in the art and science of gin distillation, Dr David Clutton, as well as a panel of gin specialists, writers and mixologists”.
Geraldine Coates, author of The Mixellany Guide to Gin, observed; “I’m delighted to see a new gin of such quality being launched. No. 3 is a very welcome addition to the gin scene and I was very honoured to be involved in its development as a member of a panel of drinks experts who gave freely of our time to taste and comment on No.3 in its early stages. Brilliantly, and indeed unusually, Berry Bros. & Rudd actually listened to what we said and incorporated our suggestions.”
Tasting notes
Nose: Bright, crisp and fresh with an uplifting welcome of juniper.
Palate: Juniper to the fore, supported by floral, summery notes and spicy, warm flavours of cardamom. There is plenty of citrus zing; grapefruit and sweet orange contribute a sharp fruitiness, complemented by the soft gingery spiciness of coriander.
Finish: The earthy dryness of angelica kicks in.
Comment: The texture and mouth-feel demonstrate No. 3’s credentials as a gin of exquisite pedigree and superlative breeding.
Dr Clutton, in collaboration with a team of spirits experts and distillers, spent a year painstakingly refining and perfecting a recipe that would meet the traditional standards of quality that Berry Bros. & Rudd have come to expect. No. 3 is distilled to Berrys’ recipe at one of Holland’s oldest distilleries; it is the only London Dry Gin from the distillery which is owned by a family firm that, like Berry Bros. & Rudd, has over 300 years of experience.
No.3 refers to the address in St James’s Street, London, which has been the home of Berry Bros. & Rudd, possibly the world’s oldest wine and spirits merchant, since 1698. The inspiration for the key on the bottle comes from that used to open the door of The Parlour, one of the oldest rooms in the shop. Notable dignitaries such as Lord Byron, William Pitt, and Napoleon III are all thought to have dined there over the past three centuries.
The objective is for No. 3 to be at the heart of the finest Dry Martinis in the most prestigious establishments throughout the United States. No.3 is already proudly served in the finest bars in London, and quickly gaining notoriety stateside in San Francisco.
No. 3 London Dry Gin will be distributed by Southern Wines & Spirits from February, 2011 throughout California, at a suggested retail of $39.99 for a 750ml bottle. www.no3gin.com
