Lynne Cheney's "When Washington Crossed the Delaware: A Wintertime Story for Young Patriots" would make the perfect addition to anyone's home library. This book tells the story of Washington crossing the Delaware on a frigid Christmas night in 1776, the Battle of Trenton on December 26, 1776 and the Battle of Princeton on January 3, 1777. I was really struck by the beautiful paintings of Peter M. Fiore. Mr. Fiore completely brings to life Mrs. Cheney's story. This is an important book for children and adults alike. Keeping in mind the struggles of our forefathers and the history of how we got to where we are today are crucial. I highly recommend this book for any family!

I strongly believe that when children are young they need to be inspired by the history of our amazing country. Sometimes getting children excited about history can be a challenge. That is why I will now turn to Lynne Cheney’s fabulous books that help them discover and learn about different stories that shaped our country. When Washington Crossed the Delaware: A Wintertime Story for Young Patriots by Lynne Cheney is dramatic account of one of the most important pieces of our history. Children will learn different values from this story like patriotism and determination. Changing the course of our great nation’s history will become a story they will never get tired of.

Reading When Washington Crossed the Delaware to my young son, I was delightfully surprised to find that I learned more about this momentous event in our nation’s history. Lynne Cheney provides a humanizing account of Washington’s clever and fateful trip across the water. She does not shy away from providing her young readers with historical facts about Washington’s trip across the river or the intense battles that ensued in the days afterward. With the help of beautiful paintings by Peter M. Fiori, your child will learn the meaning of true courage and the passion in the United States’ first patriots. Quotes from those on the battlefield and on-lookers like ten-year-old Mary Reed will help your child to understand how the Revolutionary War touched every American’s daily life. Your little one will be thrilled to hear how George Washington outfoxed the British by moving his men in the middle of the night catching the British by surprise resulting in America’s victory. You can teach your child about the importance of our nation’s history, while they enjoy a page turning story. Definitely a must add to your child’s library.

WHEN WASHINGTON CROSSED THE DELAWARE is a spectacular learning experience. It is also a fun read. I highly recommend this book for all children. I took the time to read this book and really think that it is on point. The pictures in the book are beautiful. They really are phenomenal. I think this book is great for the classroom and also as a gift. Everyone should take the time to read this book - it is great!

My students have become big fans of Lynne Cheney's work. When Washington Crossed the Delaware is no exception. They absolutely love this book. I have groups of students huddled around this book at a time reading it together. As a teacher, I don't find that kind of excitement about many books. I love that it gets my students excited about US History. They want to learn more, more, more. I hear them talking about General Washington and play acting the book during recess. It excites me to see my students so engaged in learning about the Battles of Trenton and Princeton. This is a must have for every classroom library!

I agree with Lynne Cheney. America's history must be taught to our children. In When Washington Crossed the Delaware we learn that not every Christmastime in our history has been cozy and bright. Back in 1776 we meet up with General George Washington on Christmas night. He has a crucial battle to fight one which will position the tides to turn for a successful win for the Americans. The paintings by Peter M. Fiore add an important visual element, especially for the kids reading this with you. A great way to start conversations about our beginnings! This is a great story to give any family looking to learn more about our history. Most especially with President's Day coming up in February!

Now in paperback, Lynne Cheney’s dramatic and New York Times bestselling account of a great leader’s patriotic feat.Christmas night, 1776, was a troubled time for our young country. In the six months since the Declaration of Independence had been signed, General George Washington and his troops had suffered defeat after defeat at the hands of the British. It looked as though our struggle for independence might be doomed, when Washington made a bold decision. He would lead the main body of his army across the Delaware River and launch a surprise attack on enemy forces.

Washington and his men were going against the odds. It seemed impossible that the ragtag Americans could succeed against the mightiest power in the world. But the men who started across the icy Delaware loved their country and their leader. Under his command they would turn the tide of battle and change the course of history.
Now in paperback for the first time, this story of the military campaign that began on Christmas night in 1776 will teach readers about the heroism, persistence, and patriotism of those who came before them.
