MASTERPIECE LONDON appoints Philip Hewat-Jaboor to the Masterpiece Board
Philip Hewat-Jaboor has been appointed as (non-Executive) Chairman of Masterpiece London. Thomas Woodham-Smith, co-founder of the fair takes on the role of Creative Director after his two year tenure as Chairman.
Masterpiece London, now in its 3rd year, has re-established London’s position as essential to the global art and antiques market. Philip Hewat-Jaboor an international art advisor to private collectors, museums and designers has been closely involved with the fair as the Masterpiece London Chairman of Vetting since its launch 2010 and is the natural successor for this two year appointment.
Thomas Woodham-Smith comments ‘It has been a great privilege to steer Masterpiece London to this point. Philip is renowned internationally as a connoisseur and aesthete. His keen interest and profound knowledge of so many disciplines will be an invaluable asset to the fair’s progression. I am greatly looking forward to working with Philip and the Masterpiece London Board in my new capacity that allows me to concentrate on the creative vision of Masterpiece London, essential to keeping the fair evolving and current as it matures into its next phase’.
Philip began his career at Sotheby’s in 1972 specialising in 18th and 19th century furniture and works of art; before developing the auction house’s client services department. In 1982 he opened his consultancy business with the aim of providing totally independent advice to new collectors keen to acquire works of art.
As an independent museum consultant he was the inspiration behind, and co-curator of, the exhibition 'William Beckford, An Eye for the Magnificent' held at the Bard Graduate Centre for Studies in the Decorative Arts in New York in October 2001 and at Dulwich Picture Gallery in 2002. He curated the esteemed exhibition Thomas Hope: Regency Designer held at the Victoria and Albert Museum from March to June 2008 and then at the Bard Graduate Centre in New York from July to November 2008 and co-edited the catalogue.
The Masterpiece London Board comprises Harry Apter (Apter-Fredericks), Harry van der Hoorn (Stabilo International), Giles Hutchinson Smith (Mallett), Simon Phillips (Ronald Phillips), Nicola Winwood and Thomas Woodham-Smith.
