Crushing. Demoralizing. Devastating. That was September 11th. Peachy Deegan should know as she was standing there that day when it happened in downtown Manhattan on the block of the World Trade Center just getting off the 4 line at Fulton Street walking towards the World Trade Center as the second plane went in. She is fine, fortunately.
Impressive. Enlightened. The Journey to find the light after the storm. That is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. We highly recommend it, and read on to hear why.
One of the most, if not the most, formative event of the lifetime of most people alive today was without a doubt September 11th. It would be an understatement to say it changed America and the civilized world forever, and little has been done in the arts on this event on such a major level up until the release of "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close." Not only is this a brilliant portrayal of how a series of lives were directly affected, but also it was done with the utmost respect and heartfelt sympathy for the real lives that were affected in such a drastic way. Everyone personally afflicted on September 11th will feel that they and loved ones they lost were graciously considered on many levels in the execution of this major motion picture. Adapted from the acclaimed bestseller by Jonathan Safran Foer, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close will become a chapter in American History that we don't find joy in remembering, but that we absolutely never would have the heart to forget even one tiny millisecond of. It is engraved on our souls though it does not define us: only our reaction to the tragedy defines us.
We admire and commend both Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks for their respective illustrious careers, and for their work on this film. It would be a complete challenge to come up with a more difficult subject even this many years later, and their trademark capacities for making the ordinary extraordinary will continue to impress you in this picture. However, it is the sheer talent of young Thomas Horn that will astonish you and leave you feeling with a genuine sense of what it was to be in Manhattan on that awful day, and a ringing, erie haunting of that day in days and years to come in a young life that aged beyond its years in only a matter of hours- and consider that this was a kid that was an old soul even before that awful day. From answering machines that echo with dread to sounds of sirens to a myriad of terrorizing factors that you'll see when you watch the movie, Oskar will immediately draw you into his world and leave you with a true understanding of what it was to be here on that awful day. Even before it happened, Oskar was a complex intelligent character understood by few, and embraced by his father who truly was on his wavelength. And here at Whom You Know, Peachy Deegan in particular would be the first to say that it is good to be different...and Oskar, we absolutely love your commitment to organization and your plan of attack methodology! You are beyond your years.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close though quite sad is not all doom and gloom. One favorite part of the movie were the oxymoron wars. No one needs to be told that we are fanatics of the English language, and this linguistic feat not only impressed us but also entertained us immensely.

Peachy Deegan does not like to spend a lot of time thinking about September 11th but of course did in watching Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. For anyone in Manhattan that day whether or not you were closeby downtown, watching Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is therapeutic. It gives meaning and a personal connection that no one would want to have a connection to in real life, but through the magic of movies, can gain an understanding that is essential to have as a citizen of the world.
It goes without saying that someone's father is a formative figure in a child's life, or should be. Oskar was lucky to have one that was outstanding yet brief, and one who understood him. When Oskar lost his dad, he lost a big part of himself, a part that he did not think his mother would ever "get"...expeditions were done with his dad. It also goes without saying that grandparents are a highlight of childhood and beyond, and one of our favorite rituals of the movie is the walkie-talkie scenes with Oskar and his grandmother. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close plays fantastically on family relationships that are so important and captures relationships intelligently by showing rather than telling. Scenes captured at times take no words but deliver ages of understanding in only a few moments.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is truly New York in every fashion. From a scene at Barney Greengrass to exploring in Central Park to horrors downtown, this movie gives the viewer a real sense of what was to live here then and plays out successfully the times that have passed since.
Aside from capturing the life and death of that awful day, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close teaches you an awful lot of life lessons along the way. Sometimes we have to face our fears and put on a gas mask to get ourselves on the subway. Sometimes we use a black Sharpie and a notepad instead of our voicebox. Sometimes a tambourine can be soothing and that's okay. And sometimes bribes are fine and they work to help others overcome their fears-["If you cross the bridge I'll tell you my story."]

And the final question...was there really a sixth borough??? You'll have to watch the movie to find out, because we won't tell you! Every day is a miracle, and finding the key to happiness is sometimes literal and sometimes figurative. In watching Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close you'll need to figure out for both yourself and Oskar which is which. And they're not always easy to find, because then they might not be worth finding. Sometimes it is better to stop trying to make sense of the world and accept change rather than pinch yourself. Say to yourself: "Let's Go Do Something." Go to Central Park and jump off the third swing from the right.
Also, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close will leave you feeling introspective and grateful for all that you have and all that we have to be thankful for as Americans. The resilient spirit of our nation sets a standard for the world, and if you are watching Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close in Manhattan, we recommend a visit to the September 11th Memorial afterwards and be sure to look into the sky to see that no one can keep American down. It is this quintessential spirit that this movie captures, no matter how much sadness was collectively endured that day.

SYNOPSIS
Adapted from the acclaimed bestseller by Jonathan Safran Foer, “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” is a story that unfolds from inside the young mind of Oskar Schell, an inventive eleven year-old New Yorker whose discovery of a key in his deceased father’s belongings sets him off on an urgent search across the city for the lock it will open. A year after his father died in the World Trade Center on what Oskar calls “The Worst Day,” he is determined to keep his vital connection to the man who playfully cajoled him into confronting his wildest fears.
Now, as Oskar crosses the five New York boroughs in quest of the missing lock - encountering an eclectic assortment of people who are each survivors in their own way - he begins to uncover unseen links to the father he misses, to the mother who seems so far away from him and to the whole noisy, dangerous, discombobulating world around him.
