Terrific Takeout: Dos Toros
In the hundreds of restaurant reviews we've done, we don't think we've ever found a more simple and straightforward menu than the one at Dos Toros, but don't let that deceive you. They use top quality ingredients and radiate the maxim that less is more! We began with Chips and Guacamole, above (bowl by Ralph Lauren), and the guacamole is fantastic. Fresh with flavor, guacamole was carried out over the entirety of our Dos Toros experience and was our favorite condiment. As you know Peachy Deegan is an Anglophile and then a Francophile and had no idea what Dos Toros means...owner Tyler Lohman, who hails from California, informed her that it means the bulls. It is quite the bull market at Dos Toros in that they are busy, busy and well-loved, especially by our friends at Lenox Hill. Tyler wanted to recreate the culinary experience of California Taquerias and he has done it quite well.
Next we tried the Pollo Asado Quesadilla, which means Chicken of course. All cheese used is Monterey Jack. They smartly packed up the salsa (terrific!), sour cream and guacamole as Peachy requested. And then she put them on:
Of course you see we paired this with a lovely Mark West Pinot Noir. (not from Dos Toros)
At Dos Toros you can also try Burrito's and we opted for the Grilled Steak option: Carne Asada to continue our Spanish lesson. Both the Quesadilla & Burrito had a black bean option that we elected. The Burrito had rice as well. Everything was just as good as the best Mexican places we have encountered, in a far more informal environment.
If you like spicy, they have that too, in red and green separately: the green is a salsa verde made with tomatillos and jalapeños and the red is a habanero hot sauce. Peachy couldn't take too much of either before her eyes started to water but she tried them and you will love each if you adore spicy! Above is the Burrito before the condiments and below is post-condiments.
Dos Toros is Terrific Takeout!
