OBJECTS RELATED TO THE TITANIC ON VIEW APRIL 6 AT THE NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S DIMENNA CHILDREN’S HISTORY MUSEUM Special display commemorates the centennial of the Titanic’s maiden voyage
The New-York Historical Society will commemorate the centennial of the Titanic’s maiden voyage with an installation in the DiMenna Children’s History Museum featuring items from the collection related to the Titanic, including:
· a bronze medal presented to Arthur Rostron, captain of the Carpathia, for his heroic rescue of Titanic survivors
· a Marié miniature depicting a survivor, Mrs. John Borland Thayer, whose husband died on the Titanic but whose son also survived
· Washington Dodge’s handwritten eyewitness account of the disaster, written within days of the sinking, which is one of the earliest and most compelling accounts of the tragedy
· a photographic portrait of Isidor Straus, owner of H.R. Macy & Co., and his wife, Ida, who could have entered a lifeboat but did not want to be separated from her husband, and in turn, the two perished together
The DiMenna Children’s History Museum will also host a special reading of Titanic Sinks! with author BarryDenenberg on Sunday, April 15 at 1:00 pm.
ABOUT THE DIMENNA CHILDREN’S HISTORY MUSEUM
The DiMenna Children’s History Museum is a new interactive museum at the New-York Historical Society that brings American History to life for children through the lives of other children from the past. Featuring both permanent and special exhibits that incorporate historical artifacts and replicas, objects and illustrations, three-dimensional pavilions and interactive elements, it is designed to immerse visitors in American history by encouraging them to become “history detectives” by exploring different historical periods and making their own historical discoveries. The DiMenna Children’s History Museum is named for a $5 million donation from Joseph and Diana DiMenna.
