Recently, Whom You Know reviewed "Make Someone Happy"
Peachy Deegan recently chatted with Mover and Shaker Anthony Nunziata!
Peachy Deegan: What do you credit your tremendous progress to?
Anthony Nunziata:
I approach my work and life with great focus on doing the best I can at all times. I love what I do as a singer and entertainer and my goal is simply make people happy, on stage and off. My hope is that I will continue to do this for the rest of my life.
What did you enjoy the most about making your new album?
Collaborating with my brother, fantastic musicians Brad Gardner and Michael Kuennan, and the whole team at Water Music. Making music in a positive and collaborative environment is all one can ask for as an artist.
What do you think your personal strengths are in performing?
My goal is to simply be myself onstage. I have found that audiences respond most to the honesty in which Will & I perform. An important message of our shows is about celebrating life, celebrating love, celebrating family, and celebrating self. If I'm able to be as true as I am in front of tens, or hundreds, or thousands of people at once, then I am performing in a way I hope people can take away an say, "Yes, me being me is enough, too!"
What do you think your twin's strengths are in performing?
Our close bond as brothers allows us to improvise our dialogue and have conversations with each other and the audience as if we were talking to them in our living room. Our finishing each other sentences and story-telling technique is all natural, in-the-moment banter. We don't do gimmicks nor do we emphasize us being "twins" during our show. We don't even mention it. We look enough alike for many to make that conclusion. Others after shows ask if we're even brothers. It's all fun. Will & and I are intrinsically very different people. The only thing identical about us is our DNA. That's about it!
What makes being a twin challenging on stage?
As Mom and Dad say that what we have is truly "a gift." We celebrate who we are as distinct individuals.
How will your show at Feinstein's this summer be the same and different from past shows?
This summer our show celebrates the release of our debut album, "Make Someone Happy". Lots of new songs and musical arrangements. We have a three-piece band behind us, possibly more. We're going to celebrate songs from the Great American Songbook, Broadway, contemporary songs, and fresh takes on a few Sammy Davis Jr. numbers. Lots of swing supported by some of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Now, what has been your best performing experience and why?
Every time I get a chance to perform is a gift. I am blessed to do what I love to do and I think of every performance as my last. I really do. I perform with these high stakes because it makes the "moment" important. It's not "just another show." It may be the last. Will & I pride ourselves in giving 110% in all we do. Every performance is another chance to entertain and make people laugh, cry, feel something. I see it like this. I'm merely a vessel for this great music to live on. I don't take myself too seriously but I do take seriously the importance of seizing every moment to touch people in some way through the music and our concerts - that's a gift.
How close are you to being able to perform at Carnegie Hall?
Your words to God's ears. I believe everything happens when it's meant to happen. Performing at Carnegie Hall alongside my brother would be a dream come true.
What are your other future ambitions?
Entertain in any and all mediums to reach as many people as possible.
Will you ever do a trio with Father Neenan and if so what will you sing?
Whatever he wants to sing, we'll learn it and do it.
Is your family dog still wearing a Boston College collar?
I hope so, I have to ask my Mom. I saw Noelle last week and even at 17 years old, the Yorkie is still kicking!
What or who has had the most influence on your pursuit of excellence?
My family and close friends are my rock. I am truly blessed to be surrounded by people who believe in me as I believe in them. At the end of the day, we're all here to celebrate each other's gifts and passions and be each other's champions in life. I have wonderful champions.
If you could have dinner with any person living or passed, who would it be and why?
Tony Bennett and Oprah. Tony Bennett to talk about music and art. Oprah to talk about life and being a talk show host.
What do you personally do or what have you done to give back to the world?
Wherever I travel for concerts, Will & I take part in our "Double Duty" outreach program, doing to schools, speaking to young people about the important of arts in education. Any chance to give back, I'm there.
Other than New York Notes of course, what is your favorite Whom You Know column and what do you like about it?
Peachy's Picks - I like to explore new places to eat.
Have you drank The Peachy Deegan yet and if not, why not?
I have not. I don't drink except for the occasional glass of red wine. I'm sure The Peachy Deegan is just peachy.
