Announcing Sotheby's London Evening Sale of Impressionist & Modern Art - 19 June 2012
Sotheby’s June sales of Impressionist and Modern Art in London will be led by Joan Miró's modernist masterpiece Peinture (Étoile Bleue) from 1927 – among the most important works by the artist ever to come to the market and a work that the artist himself identified as key to his oeuvre.
Miró is currently enjoying unprecedented visibility, as the recent subject of hugely successful retrospectives in London, Barcelona and Washington. A new auction record for the artist of £16.8m was established just three months ago; Peinture (Étoile Bleue) is now estimated at £15-20 million.
According to Helena Newman, Chairman of Sotheby’s Impressionist and Modern Art Department, Europe, “Peinture (Étoile Bleue) is one of Miró’s most important paintings, effortlessly bridging the transition between figurative and abstract art. His works from this period are supremely modern, timeless and of great universal appeal, making this precisely the type of painting that today’s international collectors are looking for.”
The work leads Sotheby's Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale on 19 June, which also features important pieces by Picasso, Bonnard, van Dongen, Dix, Chagall, Delvaux and Kandinsky.
