International Beauty Show New York Makes Over Manhattan
More than 61,000 beauty professionals in attendance; up from previous year
The International Beauty Show New York, experienced packed aisles and classrooms when more than 61,000 passionate and energetic professionals looking to advance their skills, see the latest and greatest in beauty and mingle with some of the top talent in the industry descended on the Jacob Javits Center in New York City. Haircare, nailcare, tools, furniture, apparel and business technology were represented among the almost 500 exhibiting companies showcasing the newest and hottest looks and trends.
Energy Abounds
"This year's IBS and IECSC New York very much mirror the current state of the professional beauty industry – resilient, innovative, optimistic about the future – And most importantly, growing, remarked Dana Lupton, vice president, beauty and spa groups at Questex Media Group LLC. “Attendance was up and both of our exhibit floors sold out. Education, from classrooms and workshops to our International Main Stage was clearly a big hit with attendees this year. The show floor aisles were packed during peak hours and attendee buying was up according to leading brands on the floor. We are thrilled with the results and overwhelming positive reaction."
Main Stage
This year’s Main Stage performances featured invaluable techniques and tricks and incorporated breathtaking cuts, colors and costumes. Industry heavy hitters, including Michael O’Rourke, Nick Arrojo, Martin Parsons, Lisa Yamasaki, Richard Ashforth and the Saco Academy London Team and Woody and Amy Michleb, performed in front of an often standing-room-only crowd who were hungry for insider tips.
Known as the “hairdresser’s hairdresser,” the legendary Michael O’Rourke featured his Angles in Motion cutting system, while first time performer at the event, Lisa Yamasaki, wowed the crowd with a spectacular look into the world of Gothic fantasy hair. Martin Parsons and Nick Arrojo’s performances highlighted the latest trends in styling and cutting. Richard Ashforth and the Saco Academy London Team presented their Collection X-S/S 2012 while the dynamic Woody and Amy Michleb provided versatile tips stylists could put to use immediately.
In addition to extraordinary Main Stage performances, professionals were able to choose from over 150 inspirational and educational classes. Classes ranged from hair coloring to cutting extensions, to natural nail maintenance and exotic manicures, to eyelash enhancement and bridal makeup. Two brand new hair tracks were featured this year: Texture Tips and Barbering Secrets and were a hit amongst stylists. Conference program highlights included:

The Exhibits
“IBS gives us an opportunity to speak with the largest concentration of hairdressers, salon owners, stylists and estheticians in the country, remarked Larry Kane, manager of chain accounts national at Takara Belmont. “…And, it (the show) just affords us an opportunity to meet personally with that group, to show them our products, and be able to answer their questions and satisfy their needs.” Further stated by Damiano Petrucelli Jr., general manager of Turbo Power, “Absolutely our favorite trade show to do in the country. This is the biggest booth that we do — it’s our busiest, and we love the support we get from IBS.”
Beauty professionals came to the show in the thousands and spent their time and money learning about new products and trends, as well as, visiting and shopping with old favorites. The Pibbs family was well represented on the show floor with large displays from Pibbs, Turbo Power, Parlux and La Brasiliana. Amongst many others; Alfa Parf/Pier Marco Group, Vidal Sassoon Academy, Goldwell, Moroccanoil, Brazilian Blowout, SHE by So Cap USA, Dashing Diva, Croc Tools, Enzo Milano, Takara Belmont, GKhair, Keratin Complex, Young Nails, Alter Ego and Arrojo also had significant presence on the show floor.
Traffic was plentiful as professionals frequently stopped in aisles where smaller exhibitors demonstrated their products and fulfilled a high level of sales. As Brian Long from Haircolorchalk.com shared, “Once again, IBS was the perfect show to conduct business. Not only did we have huge retail sales, we met some of the biggest players in the industry who wanted long term contracts and private labeling opportunities. I get more business done in three days at IBS New York than it would take to do in three months.”
