Sotheby's Impressionist & Modern and Contemporary Art Auctions Exceed $700 Million in New York
Sotheby’s May auctions of Impressionist & Modern and Contemporary Art concluded late yesterday in New York with an outstanding total of $703,910,400, well within their cumulative pre-sale estimate of $546.4/746 million. This overall result exceeds last November’s impressive $600 million season total, and is the highest achieved by Sotheby’s since May 2008.
Auction history was made at Sotheby’s Evening Sale of Impressionist & Modern Art last Wednesday when Edvard Munch’s iconic masterpiece The Scream sold for $119,922,500 – a new record price for any work of art at auction. Sotheby’s now holds four of the current five highest prices for a work of art at auction.
A release is attached that details the last two weeks of sales, including new artist records and the number of lots over $1/5/10 million in the evening auctions.
