READ THIS: SURF by PETER WISE

A little-known fact about Peachy is that she is a surfer girl, having owned a surfboard since age 11.  It is a bit difficult to catch a wave on the East River, but now that it is summer we are headed for sunnier places with better beaches and one of those places is SURF by Peter Wise, published by the fantastic people at Glitterati.  We are glad Peter also has the fantastic New England perspective on surfing-he is a cape codder and we're not talking vodka and cranberry.  We prefer Florida, but it's all East coast to us.

First off, it really is a beach-ready book in its terrific plastic cover ready to protect it from anything wet or sandy, minus the fun surfboard cutout of course.  Slide it out, and the fun begins.

Of course, Peachy likes to read in quiet places, but this book called for The Beach Boys new cd played quietly for background music in perusal of this hot number that will cool you off.  The outstanding artwork coupled with vignettes about waves will delight and inspire you, even if you are at your Manhattan cubicle and stash this away in your desk drawer for inspiration at your awful day job, which clearly would not be surfing (yet!).

People all around the world and from all walks of life chime in, from those Down Under to Science teachers.  From poets to pen pals, everyone contributes something valuable.
Also, SURF makes a lovely gift for anyone appreciative of the ocean this summer!

“Surfing goes through periods of fashion and faddishness. I know a little something about that as someone who turned thirteen in 1966. But this book is more about people who don’t follow trends, but rather move on gradually, step by step, seeking their own balance between the thrill of new experiences and the comfort of being at ease with one’s body, whether engaged inwardly with mind and spirit,

or outwardly with the great world that surrounds us.” --From the Introduction

From the earliest mention of it in Captain Cook’s Journals in 1779 to the recent article in The New York Times (8/22/07)--where surfboards provided a moment of collaboration between the Palestinians and the Jews--the surf has always been a source of inspiration, and not just for surfers, beach lovers, sailing aficionados, or nature lovers. In Surf, artist Peter Wise pairs 60 of his collectible and evocative, powerful small paintings of the surf with anecdotes from surf-lovers and aficionados around the world.

Whether professional surfing legends, like Buzzy Kerbox, to surfing journalists or even businessmen who are surfers at heart— the artist puts side-by-side the inspiring beauty of the waves with stories from the people who know them best. Here is a book sure to inspire surf-lovers and anyone who understands surfing to be a metaphor of personal expression.

The surfing world has long been embraced by mainstream pop culture, thanks to a plethora of films like Blue Crush and iconic documentaries like The Endless Summer; and youth culture itself. Even people who don’t surf like to endear themselves to the kind of qualities that describe surfers: adventurous, strong-willed, curious, independent, risk-taking individuals. Beyond surfers themselves, this miniature artbook will find a wide audience among aficionados of music, fashion, business, and art—as well as those who love to ride the waves.
