RUNNERS, SWING BOATS AND A PARIS OMNIBUS AT BONHAMS PRINT SALE
Following the success of its Grosvenor School Print sale in April, at which several world records were set, Bonhams is pleased to announce that another distinguished selection of prints by these leading British artists will feature in its Prints sale at New Bond Street, London on 11 July.
Among the pieces will be Runners by Cyril Power (£20,000-30,000); Market Day by Sybil Andrews, (£15,000-20,000); Swing Boats by Claude Flight (£15,000-20,000) and Paris Omnibus, (£15,000-20,000) also by Flight. This latter print was originally owned by the actor, prolific writer and popular newspaper columnist, Godfrey Winn and is in its original Redfern Gallery frame.
The Grosvenor School of printmaking took its name from the avant-garde Grosvenor School of Modern Art in Warwick Square, Pimlico, London. Members of the group specialised in linocuts, producing bold, fluid, swirling images which conveyed the hectic pace of life in the 1920s and ‘30s. For the ten years up until the outbreak of World War II they enjoyed great success, not only in Britain but also in Australia, the USA, China and Canada.
The Bonhams April sale of Grosvenor School Prints established a world record for an avant-garde print of £114,000 for The Gust of Wind, by Ethel Spowers; a world record price for a work by Sybil Andrews in Speedway which sold for £82,850; and a world record for the work of Claude Flight when Speed - his famous image of buses on a London street - sold for £49,250.
