2012 Artists In Residence offering presentations at Ellis Island

On Friday, July 27 from 2 to 4 p.m., the first ever Artists
in Residence at Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island will
be offering presentations about their work on Ellis Island.

The Tapestry of Immigration
Location: Ellis Island, just outside "Treasures from Home" exhibit on the
third floor, east side, of the Immigration Museum.
Debra Scacco will present her project that involves a hand loom reminiscent
of those used by immigrant women during the period her own ancestors
traveled through Ellis Island. Learn from the artist how exploring
immigration history can fuel creative endeavors and how her own immigration
story influences her art.

Feed Me A Story
Location: Ellis Island, roving near the departure line for the New York
bound ferry
Theresa Loong and Laura Nova will collect stories about food and family
history from a refreshment cart that doubles as a media production studio.
Passing out doughnuts as Salvation Army volunteers did at the turn of the
20th Century, "Feed Me A Story" will entice the public to share sensorial
memories. By answering questions like "What's your oldest family recipe?",
"What dish reminds you of home?", "Do you have an ancestor who passed
through Ellis Island and shared a recipe with you?", the project
incorporates the quintessential immigration experience with cultural
history and contemporary influences.
