Hamilton and Burr- remembrance of the duel on July 14 at Hamilton Grange

Visit Alexander Hamilton’s country home, the Grange, Saturday July 14 at
11a.m. to remember the 208th anniversary of the infamous duel between
Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr that left our country’s first secretary
of the treasury dead and our vice president fleeing murder charges. Park
Rangers will dramatically re-enact the increasingly bitter letters between
the two foes that ultimately led to the deadly showdown on July 11, 1804.
Rangers will also read eyewitness accounts of the duel and Hamilton’s final
letter to his wife Elizabeth.

The program is free and no reservations required. Afterwards visitors are
encouraged to watch the video of Hamilton’s life that also depicts the duel
and tour Hamilton’s Grange, an 1802 Federalist style home fully restored to
the country estate originally owned Hamilton until his death in the duel.
Books about Hamilton and Burr will be available for optional purchase at
the Grange’s Visitor Center.

Hamilton Grange National Memorial is located on 141st Street in St.
Nicholas Park, between St. Nicholas and Convent avenues. The Visitor Center
on the ground floor is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday.
Visitors have two options for visiting the historically furnished upper
rooms. The first is a Ranger-guided tour at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2
p.m. and 4 p.m. The second is a self-guided experience at 12 p.m. and 3
p.m. where visitors view the rooms at their own pace with a NPS ranger
nearby to answer questions. Visitation to upper rooms is limited to 15
visitors at any time. There is no on-street parking in front of the Grange,
though parking garages are nearby. Many public transportation options are
available.

More information can be found by visiting our web site at www.nps.gov/hagr
