STATEMENT OF MAYOR MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG ON THE DEATH OF MARVIN HAMLISCH
“Today, we lost a world class virtuoso and native New Yorker whose music brought stages and screens to life from Broadway to Hollywood and all points in between. As a child of immigrants, Marvin’s life was a great New York success story. He was the youngest-ever student at Juilliard, and after studying at Queens College, his gifts as a songwriter and musician allowed him to become an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award winning artist – as well as a Pulitzer Prize winner. Marvin’s connection to our City always remained strong – he even hoped to conduct the New York Philharmonic this New Year’s Eve. On behalf of all New Yorkers, we join the music world in mourning Marvin’s passing, and know that his legacy will live on in the songs that will always stay with us.”
