Sotheby's NY / First Day of Brooke Astor Auction Brings $8.7 Million - Sale Continues Tomorrow at 10am

The first day of Sotheby’s two-day auction of Property from the Estate of Brooke Astor brought an impressive $8.7 million in New York. The sale is already well in excess of its overall $6.6 million low estimate, with more than 450 lots to be auctioned tomorrow.

The sale’s proceeds will benefit charities designated by Mrs. Astor during her lifetime, including The New York Public Library, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Pierpont Morgan Library, and The Animal Medical Center of New York.

Today’s two sessions were highlighted by property from Mrs. Astor’s iconic Park Avenue duplex, with pieces spanning from 19th century paintings and old master drawings to Chinese works of art, fine porcelain, silver and more – a list of the day’s top lots is below. Tomorrow’s two sessions will feature property from her Westchester estate ‘Holly Hill,’ as well as a wonderful selection of jewelry from her personal collection.
