An Update from Mover and Shaker Jessica Lappin

Jessica tells us:
I just met with Captain Sheerin, commanding officer at the 17th Police Precinct, and I want to thank all of our first responders for their commitment and work these past few days.

In some parts of our city, Sandy caused devastating destruction. Recovery efforts are well underway and, if you are willing and able, volunteers are needed at shelters, including the Baruch shelter and the Seward Park shelter in Lower Manhattan. You can emailnycservice@cityhall.nyc.gov to sign up to volunteer.

WE ALSO NEED WATER for seniors and others in NYCHA buildings without power. If you bought gallons of water to prepare for the storm and don't need it, please bring it to my district office, located at 330 East 63rd Street, Suite 1K. You can call first to arrange a drop-off at 212-980-1808.

Public schools will remain closed to students tomorrow and Friday. Most senior centers will be open tomorrow.  Parks and beaches will remain closed for now and hopefully will reopen this weekend.

Bus service resumed today for free on a limited schedule and the MTA just announced that limited subway service will begin tomorrow. Access-A-Ride will also resume limited service tomorrow and is currently taking reservations.

ConEd is working to restore power.  Customers in Manhattan who are served by underground equipment should have power back in 3-4 days. Restoration to customers in other areas served by overhead lines will take at least a week. If you need to report an outage, please call 1-800-75-Coned or go to www.coned.com. It's helpful to have your account number when you contact them.

On Roosevelt Island, due to a power outage at Coler, some patients were relocated to Goldwater and others were sheltered in place. An emergency electricity crew has been dispatched to the hospital. The Tram and Red Bus service resumed yesterday. The FDR Memorial and Four Freedoms Park was not damaged and will reopen to the public November 8th.

For those dealing with loss or damage to your home or business, please know that there are resources available to you.

Small businesses dealing with the impacts of the storm may have access to loans, tax relief, temporary office space, and other city programs. Please call 311, www.nyc.gov or go to the city's Department of Small Business Services website to learn more:http://www.nyc.gov/html/sbs/html/home/home.shtml

If you have flood insurance, you should file a claim as quickly as you can with your broker, insurance agent, or company. Here is the link to the New York State Department of Financial Services website for more information on disaster relief resources: http://www.dfs.ny.gov/consumer/disascon.htm

Since Hurricane Sandy was declared a federal disaster, you can also apply to FEMA atwww.disasterassistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). You may apply for this disaster assistance whether you have insurance or not.

During this rebuilding period, I know that New Yorkers will do what we can to help friends and neighbors through this financially and emotionally difficult time.

Best,
Jessica Lappin
